Is there a software program out there that can detect which type of memory modules are being used. i.e. pc133, pc2100, pc2700 etc.

Sometimes the label on the module is hard to cipher. I know you can check by the motherboard but wondeing if theres a software program that will do this detection.

Aida32 When you open the program click the plus next to motherboard and then click on SPD.

edit: I should add that it's free for personal use.

I tried the program and when I go to the spd function nothing displays. Any idea why this is happening.

The machine I am working on has been getting a lot of memory offset errors with I.E. and other programs. Have run diags. on system using PC Certify, MemDoc, etc and so far nothing hardware wise shows as a problem but when I run System Monitor the usage is off the board even when idle then all of a sudden the machine starts squeeling and the only way to stop the squeeling is to shut down. One error does come up and that being the RTC fails. From researching this that could be anything from the battery to a board problem.

Could there still be a bad memory module and now even more so because aida displays nothing.

    Any ideas would be helpful.

I would guess that it's more than likely your ram cards don't have an SPD EPROM chip on them.
I suppose it's possible but it's more likely your ram cards don't have a SPD EPROM chip on them. If this is the case Aida32 wouldn't show anything. You could take a look at your ram to see if it's there or not. The chip itself looks sort of like the rest of the ram chips but it's quite a bit smaller and has only 8 pins. Don't know if there's a standard or not but those that I've seen have all been located to the right of the ram chips by the end of the card.

As for your squealing noise, have you ruled out the possibility that it could be a warning sound of some sort? Possibly for fan speeds or heat related etc.. Could it possibly be a fan that has a bad bearing or bushing or some such thing?

On this board I count 10 rectangle proms and then there are two at the top and two at the bottom of the ram modules. Looked at my other systems and I dont have these. This board is an Asus A7A266 and it has 2 ddr and 3 sdram slots. Unique board first time I've seen such a board.

Because this is an Athlon 1400 system whomever built it for the user installed 2 extra large fans inside the case as well as the heatsink fan. Checked those before and they seem to be spinning properly. Ran 3 different memory analizers programs and they all come back with no errors on the modules. Rebuilt the system from scratch with 98 2nd then upgrade to XP Home and so far things are running quite nicely.

I thank you for you assistance.
