Memory problem...

    Hi all its been awhile... Ok heres my dillema. Customer has a HP 8655c. It had 64 megs of ram they wanted to upgrade to 256. Simple enough...Not so ..When I added the new Ram I got a Windows protection fault at bootup and it said to restart the machine so I did it goes to safe mode. Tried everything there..Cked and reset the Bios, notta. The ram is 2 sticks of sdram 100...I also turned off a startup pgms to make sure thier were no conflicts their notta:eek: . So am I looking to hard ? Or is this a HP HA HA...I have a8660c of my own I took on trade it has one stick of 256 in it HP says that shouldnt work but it does.. Also when the 64meg is put back in it fires right up...Im pretty sure its an I\O conflict but cant find it...ANY HELP QUICK WOULD BE APPRECIATED. Ive lost money on this simple upgrade LOL.

    I'll just throw this in as a person with way less knowledge then you. :) Have you tried one new and the old memory? I would also double check the specs for the new. I'm sure you have thought of this, but I'll offer any ways.

    With the IBM Aptiva's, if you exceed the maximum memory with a combination of RAM and video memory, the computer will not run. Not sure if HP is the same.

    I upgraded a Compaq by replacing the existing RAM with 2x128 Chips and nothing worked, although I believe it may have simply just put the KeyBoard to sleep, which I had not realized at the time.

    Thinking that possibly the original (Compaq) Chip may have had some special Properties required by the Compaq system, I tried leaving it in place, and added the other 2, and everything worked fine.

    At this point I did not see any point in testing my "Sleeping KeyBoard" theory.
