    Hello Adam,

When did this start? Was it suddenly or a progression?

How much memory do you have?

What's running in the background? For too many startup programs, refer to this thread http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=37002

    Regards - Charles

It started a long time ago (up to a year), and seems to have become worse over the last year or so.
But it is only recently I have found these forums
I have 76.6 Gb of memory on my C: drive in total
but have only used 7.38 Gb of it
When i start up i have 14 programs shown running in task manager

    does that help?

    Hi Adam,

By memory, I thought you meant physical RandomAccesMemory, and that is the standard industry nomenclature for that term, not Hard Drive space which you seem to have in abundance
    .
Go back to that thread I referenced and use the links I provided to look up what these 14 programs are and see if they are needed - disabling uneeded processes will speed up your system.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Adam,

I have minimised down the programs from task manager, although it seems it told me to delete 'rundll32'

I should have asked this in the previous post: Task Manager is an XP utility, and as far as I know, not in WinME, so what is this program? Is it a 3rd party program? Can you recall the exact wording of it seems it told me to delete 'rundll32'?

As for replacing it, do you have a WinME disc? If so, do a search for it, the full name is RUNDLL32.exe. It belongs in the Windows folder, not in any of the Windows sub-folders.

The 'task manager' I am using is the one when you press Alt + Ctrl + Del
    Is that not task manager?
and the wording telling me to delete rundll32 was on the internet on one of the links you gave me, I think it was the first or second one, any help to you?

Ok, but disabling any process this way is temporary - will start up again on next bootup.

To stop startups: One of two ways - using msconfig: Run > type msconfig > ok > startup tab and uncheck boxes.
From the linked WinME thread, that is the way to disable startups.

Please be more specific on the rundll deletion - could you copy/paste the reference and which link it was, have to be very precise here, I don't want to quess anymore here.

    Regards - Charles

    reason for deleting rundll32:
" rundll32.exe is a process which executes DLL's an places their libraries into the memory, so they can be used more efficiently by applications. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated. Note: rundll32.exe is also a process which is registered as the W32.Miroot.Worm. This Trojan allows attackers to access your computer, stealing passwords and personal data. It is a registered security risk and should be removed immediately. Please see additional details regarding this process "

    Hi Adam,

Ok, so what made you think it was a virus?

What you're giving me is a conflated quote, and the recomendation to delete is ONLY after you make sure that it's not the MS process.
I can send you a copy of rundll32.exe - PM me to tell me where.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Adam,

I decided that it would be better for you to download a copy of Rundl32.exe - here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/winfiles.html

Merijn is the author of HijackThis and other ant-malware programs, so I have complete confidence that this is a legitimate copy.

The copy that I have is from my saved WinMe files that I created before I took Me off my system. I don't really know whether this file is system dependent or not. So in order not to have any questions about it, a fresh copy I think would be better.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Adam,

    A few more suggestions:

Run the on-line virus checkers linked to in this page: http://www.windowsbbs.com/links.php

And download MS's Anti-Spyware app, link for it on this page: http://www.windowsnewsletter.com/current-issue.html

Quite good - at the moment it has the best record for detection and removal. It comes with resident protection which I don't use - I have other defenses, whether you want to devote the resources to it is for you to judge.

If you do reformat, consider installing XP, no 9X resource bottleneck - handles memory much better.

    Regards - Charles

I now have xp installed, and it seems to be alright, apart from one thing...
I cant find my sound drivers, anywhere
Can you help in this matter?
and do you know how to find out what your sound card is?

    Hi Adam,

Right click My Computer > Hardware > Device Manager > Expand Sound video tree.

I cant find my sound drivers, anywhere
    Double click Legacy Drivers

and do you know how to find out what your sound card is?
In that tree, should be a name such as Creative SB Live (mine) - Double click that.

Double clicking on these items takes you to a page that will show the Device Status.

Are there any yellow question marks next to any of the devices?

Now that you have XP, you should post in the XP forum, you're post will be looked at by far more people :)

    Regards - Charles
