Microsoft has sent notification of XP update KB925398 which is for Media Player 6.4 My MediaPlayer is version 9. Is this a mistake? Do I need this update?

Speaking of MediaPlayer, I want to update to or install version 10. Do I need to uninstall the one I have now before installing version 10?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You should just be able to do the update.
If it was not that way Microsoft's phones would ringing off the wall.
1/4 of 1 % of a large base is still a lot of people.

    Ann,
I reacted the same way as you ... ... Media Player 6.4 ... ... that version predates XP.

I took a peek into Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-078 and I quote:

which seems to cover most Media Players up to and including WMP 9.

If you do upgrade to WMP 10, then I think there is no need for that update. There is no uninstall option for WMP 9 (that I have found, nothing in Add/Remove) which means that you do the upgrade "on top of" WMP 9. After upgrading to WMP 10, go to Windows Update and check for updates. If KB925398 is still offered - get it.

Well, I have MP 10 and I was offered the update too. I accepted it and haven't had any problems.

Actually, some might be surprised to know that you do have an earlier version of Media Player besides 9 or 10 or whatever. Look in your windows\system32 folder for a file named mplay32.exe. It's installed when you install windows. Mine is version 5.1. It may be that the update is for that one. ???????????

Thanks for that information, Zander! I think it is better to upgrade first and get KB925398 when done. What do you think?

My file version is 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158). It seems like all upgrades really are upgrades and e.g. WMP 9 was not substituted for WMP 8 but the core is the same.

    Christer and Zander,

Now I am really confused.

According to the Security Bulletin Crister posted, there are two different downloads, 923689 and 925398 both of which are MS-06-078.

Vulnerability in Windows Media Format Could Allow Remote Code Execution (923689)

1 Microsoft Windows Media Format 7.1 through 9.5 Series Runtime on the following operating system versions:

Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 - Download the update (KB923689)

According to the above I should d/l KB923689, which I did.

2 Microsoft Windows Media Player 6.4
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 - Download the update (KB925398)

Isn't it one or the other? TIA!

    Ann,
I downloaded and installed both updates (two out of five not counting the Malicious Software Removal Tool) on dec 13. I verified by checking in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and both updates were installed on my computer on that day.

If you click to download the respective update, the download page provides a link to a KB-article:

    KB923689

    KB925398

If you check the "APPLIES TO ", the latter should only apply to systems running WMP 6.4. This is confusing but Zander pointed out to us that the core on our systems is 5.1 and it may be the reason why we need both updates.

You could try installing KB923689, reboot and check at Windows Update. If KB925398 is still offered, get it.

KB925398 put two new files in System32. I have WMP 11.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dxmasf.dll (Windows Media Source Filter) 6.4.9.1133
C:\WINDOWS\system32\strmdll.dll (Windows Media Services Streamer Dll) 4.1.0.3936
They were also placed in the DLLCache folder.

KB923689 was not installed on mine.

I don't know what that means, but I want it.:p

My experience is the same as Bmoore1129 . I have WMP11. Only Update 925398 was offered last week by Windows Update. And I installed it.
    Everything seems to run OK.

Ann--I am not saying that Windows Update is perfect, but if WU is offering both then install them. If it is only offering one, then install it. That is one of the functions of Windows (Microsoft) Update--to chose only the updates your system needs.

My thanks to all for the help. I will go ahead and install the MP 6.4 update as suggested. I rather be safe than sorry so I like to make sure before I act, especially where MS is concerned.

    Bmoore1129 -

"KB923689 was not installed on mine. "

KB923689 is for Microsoft Windows Media Format 7.1 through 9.5 Series. You are past that with MP 11.
