With xDSL you need 2 network cards if your wanting to share your xDSL connection to the rest of your LAN.

    Internet<----->|1NIC - NIC2|<------->Your LAN

    Or

You might be able to use internet connection sharing (haven't used this is a long while)?

If you have another box floating about you could use this as your internet gateway/firewall/NAT. Read this for some ideas:

    http://www.wpool.com/guides/gateways.html

    Or(again)

Start from scratch and learn how to setup a unix based firewall/NAT gateway. Either Redhat or OpenBSD will do this for you. I use OpenBSD, very secure!

    Cheers

ah! Your connecting ME to a XP machine (pays to fully read your first post, duh!) On your XP machine you need to use a password with your user account.

Then create your shares these are read only shares, change if you want write access.

Make sure both work group names are the same.

Create a user account for your ME machine (on the XP machine) or use the same user name/password as your XP Machine.

I'm in in the right direction here?

    Cheers

    Dna2k3 - more information please.

    1. Please say what NICs (network interface cards) you are using in the ME PC. And if you got new drivers for them when you changed over to ME from 98.

1.a. If you are connecting directly from the ME PC to your modem, you will need to use the same cable that once connected modem and hub. It may not be wired the same as a PC <-> Hub cable (probably isn't) and if you have the wrong sort of cable, you don't get a connection.

    2. What are you using to allow internet sharing and which PC is in control of that?

    3. On the ME PC, do start~run~winipcfg, click the button for details, and post all the information you get.

    4. For ME and XP to network together properly, you will need to do as Dagga said. Here it is in a little more detail.

    - you must be logging on to both PCs. Username and password both and you will have better luck. You can use the same logon for each if you want.

    - if you choose to use different user names, you will need to add the ME username/password to the list of users the XP PC knows about. So, from the XP PC, right-click My Computer and select manage. Go to the users & groups section, open the users folder, and add the ME user & password.

Be nice if you said how you got it fixed.

Only way I can think of to avoid having username/password on ME that XP knows about is to enable the guest account. You can certainly do that but it leaves the XP box way too wide open for my taste.
