Ah... something very wierd just happened to my network. The connection problem was finally fixed, it was running fine. Then I turn on my computer this morning, and something's screwy with the network.

Very screwy indeed. Now, instead of detecting the SMC wireless network as it should, it displays MCIHomeWireless. Huh? And when I try to connect to it, I need a network key that I don't have, a WEP or something. What is going on?

I assume it's some type of virus or... something. The question is, how do I get rid of it? Again, the problem only occurs on my wireless computer. I must have been careless in downloading or something. Whatever the case may be, please help.

EDIT: I disabled and re-enabled the wireless network adapter, and I'm able to detect and connect to the SMC network. For whatever reason, the DNS code was gone, but re-entering it allowed me to get onto the Internet. However, the MCIHomeWireless network, whatever that is, is still detected. Which perplexes me, as I've never even heard of MCI, let alone purchased any of their products. So, either a neighbor has installed some uber-powerful router that I'm somehow detecting, or there's some type of invasive... thing in my machine. Can anyone shed some light on the problem?

How close is your neighbors house? What kind of area do you live in? Urban, rural? suburbs? Its possible that your neighbors set up a wireless access point at their house, and it is broadcasting all the way to your computer. Another thing that could have happend is someone (neighbor ost likely) has set up an access point and is using YOUR connection.

I live in a rural area; kind of a cottage area, not farming. My closest neighbor is roughly 100-120 ft. away, with a line of bush between us and them. The other neighbors are over 200 ft. away, with dense bush between. I don't know, I suppose it's possible my adapter's picking up the neighbor's signal, but it's kind of a stretch. The reception is less than 1 bar, which I think would indicate a very poor connection indeed, but I might need to actually connect to determine the reception.

Whatever the case may be, I am able to connect to my network now... for whatever reason I wasn't able to detect my SMC router when I posted this, only the MCI. I still detect the MCI, weherever it is, but at least I've got a strong signal from my SMC again. It's a little perplexing, though, I wouldn't think I'd be able to detect my neighbor's network from my range, if indeed he has one. Does MCI even make routers? Aren't they a phone service?
