    I have a network which had three XP Home computers on it. One died. I replaced it with a new system with XP MCE. Now the MCE system cannot connect to or print through the Home edition box with the printer attached to it. All computers are on the same home workgroup, and are all within the range of applicable network addresses. Info below.

    Mike = XP Home + HPLaserJet 1012, IP=192.168.2.2
    Ike = XP Home, IP=192.168.2.3
    Spike = XP MCE, IP=192.168.2.4
    Gateway = 192.168.2.1

    All systems see the router which also serves DHCP. All systems can access the internet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dennis

    Open Net Places and run the network wizard, sometimes this must be done even though config'd the network manually.

    I have already done that three times now. Are there any issues between XP MCE and XP home?

    Unless I am reading incorrectly the Printer is hooked to Mike ( the host machine ) which means it is SHARED by the other machines.

    I had the same problem with an HP 5550 printer which was ( and still is ) hooked to this XP Pro machine and was ( but no longer ) shared by two 98SE machines.

    We had all kinds of problems printing from the two 98SE machines. UNLESS I rebooted this XP machine And we also needed to be sure that this machine was alwasy on.

    I finaly got discussted and got an HP 5850 ( networkable ) and plugged it into the Router and BINGO !! no more printing problems. Any machine can use the printer at anytime regardless of the status of the others. I just have to be sure the Printer is left powered up.

    Over a period of time it has proven well worth the cost of the new printer.

    Not really what I was hoping to hear. I now have a MUCH better understanding why a friend has stayed with Win2K. You would think Microsoft would have networking down fairly well by now.

    I would start fresh and redo the network on all comps. Start by using static ip addresses for each comp. Because if use dhcp and the ip address of the comp with the printer changes, other comps won't be able to print immediately.

    XP Home uses Simple File Sharing and cannot be turned off. Not sure about MCE, I believe it is same as xp home as far as networking goes.

    Make sure File & Print Sharing is installed on all comps.

    Another thing against sharing ( learned the hard way ).

    If the Host machine takes a trip South the others can't print.

    Having a Network Printer hooked directly to the Router and installed on each machine works much better and far more reliable. And they can still print.

    It took me a while and a bit of bad language but having all three machine individual and not depending on any other for anything has proven over time to be well worth the effort.
