    • Turned the pc on and there was no internet connection
    • Unplugged the router and restarted and the internet connection came back
    • McAfee security had a yellow ! and the message was updates needed not protected
    • Selected fix this problem automatically and the message was still there
    • Went to the update tab and selected update and it worked
    • Then I went to the scan tab and selected full scan
    • Checked the tab that said "turn the pc off automatically if no threats are found during scanâ€
    • 3 hours later the scan was 94% done and I had the business closed so I had to go home

Today the boss called and said the pc won't work and it's my fault  Is it my fault, how do I explain this to someone that only knows word 1 about pcs?

What is the fault? Is it related to doing an Antivirus scan? That we all do (or should do) from time to time.

If McAfee has an issue this is what I'd suggest (althought not exactly what I'd do)
    Uninstall McAfee
    Restart
    Run the McAfee Removal Tool
    Restart
    Install the latest McAfee again

Oh also I personally don't like McAfee, I feel that it doesn't do a good job
I use Free Avira Antivirus which I feel is better. I just added that so you knew my thoughts.

I agree with you about McAffee. I use avast on my home pc. I have no say over the work pc, however. The bookkeeper uses it 5 times more than I do.
To make matters worse, the pc maintenace co. that visited there today said that they couldn't do anything to fix the pc!
Because I don't use McAffee very often, is it possible that the pc didn't shut off and instead became infected with a virus? Or is this a case of possible coworker sabotage to frame me?
I am being harangued, and will probably be browbeaten and billed for this pc issue.

Not a lot we can do either without a better description

    Doesn't tell us anything.

In what way does it not work?
Is it powering up at all?
Does it crash during the boot?
    Does it report any errors?

More information is required but like any consumer device it may simply have just died.

This is what I was phoned and told happened at the workplace today, I have the day off.
It's funny how, when, they admit I know more about pcs than they do and still feel that somehow this is all my fault.
But, do you have enough knowledge about McAffee to tell if this possibly could be my fault? I feel that it is not, the program wasn't working when I turned on the pc.

    ljeanbeans,

With the information you've supplied it is impossible to say. Post back tomorrow when you have more information.

I'm not scheduled again until Saturday. Hopefully I will hear something, but I may simply be barred from the pc because I now have a new job and am leaving this one in weeks. Either way, I hope they don't slander me or penalize me for something if it wasn't even my fault.

Obviously you must be allowed to turn the PC on? Maybe not?
You know I was thinking this could work both ways.

The boss could have come in and turned the PC on; done an update and scan, and then possibly found and fixed an issue. Then, turns around to you and states, "Don't you update your computer at home?!'"
This obviously being your fault, that you hadn't done a full updated scan.!!

I think that's counted as a lose, lose, situation

Maybe you need a more defined job description. Or the computer should be taken away, if you are not allowed to turn it on. Note: Turning it on would also mean allowing Antivirus updates and even possibly full scans. Ideally overnight!!

Anyway, without knowing the full story (their side) we can hypothesize all day.
It may be that it was just about to die. ie bad timing.
The responsibility of keeping a working computer is on the manager (and 3rd party techs he hires) not you.
That's like saying, Why didn't fix that guys brain? Um  I'm not a brain surgeon!
Ask him if he'd like to pay for some official (certificate) computer tech training; just in case you stumble upon an issue on the work computer one day, and you accidentally decide to do what the whole dam n world would do! :D

I wouldn't touch the computer ever again, without his instruction manual been followed to a T.
Oh, my Antivirus has an issue, that's not in the work manual  Scream and run around mad, this is your only option. Or better yet go get him and say what do we do? I'd know what to do at home, but here at work! I'm just totally bewildered; and its Not In The Work Manual :p

    EDIT

And if the boss just happens to be away when the Antivirus wants to be updated. Close the factory, All Out. You have an ANTIVIRUS issue, best everyone stands as far back as possible. I don't think the world will end, but this must be the first sign of doom ;):D

    This is resolved

I feel very vindicated by your responses.
I found out from the bookkeeper that McAffee wasn't compatible with peachtree. I just reiterate that I would've been in trouble at any other job for NOT updating the antivirus.
A call was placed to my new job (2 jobs right now) that same day and I succinctly and professionally explained the situation, saying that I was upset about it for awhile, and I got a sympathetic "Well, yeah." response. Nuff said. Thanks a bunch.
