I hope I am getting this in the right place, but if I am not, I am sure it will get moved. :)

Like I said, maybe I am dumb, but what is Mozilla?

I was just at a site for Privacy testing & it said my browser was Mozilla v2 something.

I am confused. Is Mozilla part of IE, or part of someone else? I always thought my browser was called Internet Explorer, so where does this Mozilla fit in?

Yes, I am still uninformed about a lot of stuff.

I have noticed in earlier threads that there is a Mozilla v9.9 out, but I don't know why I have Mozilla in the first place.

    Can someone please explain.

    DUM DUM Deloris

    Mozilla

The original name for Netscape's browser, now called Navigator. Some people claim that the term is a contraction of Mosaic Godzilla (e.g., Mosaic killer), since Mosaic was the number one Web browser at the time Netscape began developing its product. The term Mozilla is still used by many Web developers and appears in server log files that identify the browsers being used.

In 1998, Netscape decided to make the source code for Navigator freely available to the public. The Netscape group responsible for releasing the code is called mozilla.org, and its Web site is www.mozilla.org.

OK. Thanks Steve, for the information.

I know that it may not be an important issue but, I am still curious to know why that page said my browser was Mozilla. As far as I know, I am running IE 5.01, so why would it say that I am running Mozilla? This seems a bit strange to me.

To make a long story short, it has to do with compatibility issues (more from years ago when Netscape was the leading browser). Can't really see it being necessary anymore but IE reports itself to websites as mozilla so what you are seeing is normal. I have no idea why they do this still as it seems that most sites are written with both in mind and those that aren't tend to be problems for netscape more then IE. Perhaps it's just a traditional thing now.

    Thank you Zander.

Now I understand. I appreciate you telling me this. My curosity is satisfied now. :D

Seems that MS would want to be identified as MS, not NS. LOL

Of course, I am still running 98 too. So it may have changed with the advent of XP, I don't know. Even still, I plan to stay with 98 as long as possible. :)
