I have been using the Maxtor external drive but accidently pulled the USB cable out of the drive box. Now, when I try to access the drive through Windows Explorer, I get "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. "

    CHKDSK is no help.

Is there any software out there that can fix this problem? I would like to save the data on the drive if possible.

    Thanks,
    Steve

There are several file recovery programs available - I suggest you try a freebie - File Recovery - I have used their version for CF cards to good effect.

If/when you are successful in recovering data format the drive - your problem most likely arose because the drive was active - reading/writing when the cable was accidentally removed.

As a side note - always use 'Safely Remove Hardware' to disconnect USB hard drives.
