Anyone have thoughts on the best choice both using RAID 0 and not using RAID?

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus (2 MB, ATA133) or WD SE (8MB, ATA100).

I'm hopeing to get items togeather in the next 2-3 weeks to build a computer.

    Thanks.

I went for the WD800JB running two in RAID 1 config.....

There's not much difference between ATA100 and 133. Theoretically 33%, but that isn't achieved in 'real life'.

From what I've read, the 8MB cache on the WD does make a huge difference though....

Thanks Arie. Do you have an opinion as to the 'real world' advantage of RAID-0? I think I read where it only give a 20% increase in performance.

Personally, I prefer WD to Maxtor but both make decent drives and have respectable warranties with advance RMA's and no hassle replacement policies. My preference for WD is based upon personal experience of lower failure rates. However, the last several 40gig WD's I have purchased are much lighter - I think they have moved to a single platter design and if so, it would be premature to comment on these - not enough experience with them yet.

As to your question about RAID 0, you'll find it faster but depending on the rest of your hardware and potential performance bottlenecks, it may not be that noticeable.

As to your 2mb and 8mb drive specs, we'll let you edit that one.

Nope. I'm using RAID 1, and never used RAID 0.
