This problem is a likely combination of Hareware/Software ....

Yesterday a colleague installed a 300 Gb Maxtor external USB2 HD and Dantz Retrospective Backup to his PC running XP, but with only USB 1 on board. The usual warning message re USB2/1 is displayed.

First attempt to run backup ended in a BSOD after a couple of files were copied across ......

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    Stop 0x000000D1 (0xB2C88A15, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0xF9E17D36)

On reboot he tried a straight file copy to the Maxtor without problems.

Several uninstalls of Maxtor OneTouch and Dantz software have failed to solve the problem and he is now unable to copy files direct to the Maxtor without getting the same BSOD.

Various searches at MS and via Google indicate that this error is .....

Driver related, possibly a filter driver associated with the backup software.

    Error is a write error

Possible connection with a firewall - not ZoneAlarm Pro which he runs.

Nothing on the Maxtor site, nor Dantz that is relevant.

Current advice is to ensure that the XP USB patch is loaded although it does not seem to be relevant, to uninstall for the umpteenth time OneTouch and Dantz and to try a file transfer again.

    Further advice to run sfc.

Failing that to use System Restore (bit wary of that) and to use a reg cleaner (even more wary of that as he is not that computer savvy - and some distance away) to clear out all references to OneTouch and Dantz and to start over.

Any further suggestions more than welcome - hoping not to have to make the trip over to his place :)

I wouldn't be a bit wary of using the search function of RegSeeker to do that, even for an unsavvy. Might save you a trip. :)

    Get USB2?

    Installing a USB2 PCI card isn't expensive.

    Dave

You'e right - I did a dummy run on my m/c with Dantz installed and it seems pretty foolproof :) Have told him how to do that. Thanks.

    Matt

It's a thought - uninstalling the secondary IDE controller and rebooting found his missing CD/DVD drives on his second m/c. I don't know the chipset, but will find out.

    Sparrow

Maybe, but not the solution I feel. Latest info by answerphone is that the Maxtor works fine as an external drive plugged into his second m/c which is also USB 1, but when plugged into this m/c as a simple external drive - no Dantz or Maxtor software aboard although registry yet to be cleaned, the same BSOD appears when trying to transfer a file. Strange thing is it worked a couple of times in this mode a couple of days ago, now it's constant BSOD's.

I shall speak with him later today - thanks for the responses - keep 'em coming :D

I'm off out for the day shortly just received an update via email ....

I don't have time right now to consider or even think about the implications of this, but if anyone has any ideas please post!

    Old mobo?

    Hi Pete,

Have your friend read this USB1/2 comparison. It still sounds to me like hardware incompatability. Are the 2 mobos the same on the 2 m/c's? If not... :)

    Hi Sparrow,

Found out this evening its a Gigabyte GA-6VX7+ mobo with VIA VT chipset circa 2000 so I've pointed him at Via Arena to update the chipset drivers.

Mobos on the 2 machines are not the same - other machine is nearly current - 18 months old.

Hear what you say re. USB 2, but want to sort this out first, if possible.

    Good luck.

Hope you find an answer. I just dont think you should feel bad if you don't.

    Testing...testing...
Yes I am back on the air. I had a problem and could not post to the forum, so I sent Pete a private message about USB controller drivers. (Thanks Arie for fixing my e-mail).

Pete...VIA chipsets are where I have had trouble and had to update the USB controller drivers. Please note that they are not bundled with the VIA 4-in-1 (now called Hyperion) chipset drivers, the USB contoller drivers are a separate download under Periferals on VIA's download page:
    http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2

Hope they work, although I am still trying to think of a few reasons why you will still need to go over and look at the machine in person :D.

    Welcome back, Matt :)

I wondered about the USB drivers - that is the next thing to try if the update via the 4 in 1 drivers has no effect - at least the site indicates that the patch can do no harm.

My friend is away until Sunday so a few days of relative peace - some hope :)

I really don't want to make the trip to see him right now so take that thinking cap off :D

I just ran across this. The concept might interest you, but not the price!

    Have a nice weekend. :D

    Stop 0x000000D1 (0xB2C88A15, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0xF9E17D36)

The driver loaded within the range 0xF9E17D36 tried to write to memory 0xB2C88A15 while at IRQL 2. b2000000 is typically where the system file cache lives. Taking a giant leap of logic, i'd guess that the driver tried to mess with files in its DPC routine.

Questions: What driver is loaded at that address?

My friend has returned from holiday :(

After another hour plus on the phone we are no further forward .....

Loaded latest Via 4 in1 drivers.

Transferred an ~2Mb file to Maxtor - OK
Transferred an ~ 27 Mb file to Maxtor - OK
Attempted to transfer several files ~ 60 Mb total - immediate BSOD

Loaded Via USB patch and lost the drive completely - some how recovered it.

Attempted to transfer the samr ~ 27 Mb file - immediate BSOD

I'm lost and just about ready to throw in the towel on this.

As the drive works on his other networked computer with a newer mobo - still only USB 1 though I have suggested he tries to run the backup of the recalcitrant computer through the network.

No doubt he will be bending my ear again tomorrow!

I would boot into Safe Mode and remove any drivers related to USB. I could not be sure about IDE drivers with that sort of drive arrangement, but while you're there....

BIOS ugrade. My friend could not get USB mouse to install on a Gigabyte GA-6VXE. Fixed with a BIOS upgrade. (unfortunately, I tried a format first :( , but left all the important programs for him to reinstall :D )

The transfer of files from the recalcitrant computer via the network to the newer one with the Maxtor plugged in worked OK - single files - large/small and multiple files. He is now going to set up the Dantz software.

    Matt

You're still trying to make me make the trip :D BIOS update - maybe - I'll have to see what is involved with Gigabyte boards - my Asus is a doddle - and whether or not he can cope! Thanks for the input.

ack, sorry, i forgot i had a thread down here in the hardware forum.

Get the PSTAT utility from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/tools/existing/pstat-o.asp

It will spew from stuff, and down at the bottom will be output like this:

Your mission is to look through the list and figure out who is loaded just below this address: 0xF9E17D36

Once you have that data, you know which driver is blowing up. Seems to be a rash of these USB blue screens. I hope you guys are all pushing 'send error report' so it shows up on the OCA radar.

I do not beleive the installer adds that directory to your path. Since this is a command line program, you have to be in the right directory. You might have to CD "c:\program files\resource kit " before typing pstat. Its just a command line program, I've run it successfully on nt4-2003 machines, it'll work.
