    Howdy folks,
    I have a PC100 M761zx MB with a Pentium iii 500 Mhz speed.
How do i know what the Maximum speed I can upgrade this board to. I tried the mfg site but my board # is not listed. I want to upgrade the cpu to a gig pentium 4 if possible. should I just go get another MB with the chip in it already to be safe????

    Thanks

    Hi Memorex,

Pentium III processors came in the Slot 1 or Socket 370 format. Pentium 4s use a Socket 423 or Socket 478 format. So If you're set on a Pentium 4 you'll need a different motherboard. The Pentium III is available in speeds up to 1.4 GHz.

I can't find any info on your motherboard either. This is a common flaw with PcChips tech support. Do you have a CD with motherboard drivers on it - sometimes there's a copy of the manual on the CD.

You can download the manual for the pcchips M761-BX/M761--ZX at http://www.bns-computer.de/Support/mb_761.htm The file M61E.pdf is the manual and it is in english. The manual says it supports a Pentium II 233-500 MHz and Celeron 266-333MHz.

I found this link through a google search :)

Russ, does your board have the slot 1 as this link shows? If so the fastest PIII you could put on your board (assuming your BIOS can support it) is a 100 MHz Bus 1 Ghz, although I haven't seen too many of those. For some reason it sticks in my mind ( I could be wrong with this) that your particular board won't support higher than the 100 Mhz BUs PIII 800E. In that instance I don't think you'll see a big enough performance increase with a 300 Mhz jump in speed.

You can see all the PIII specs here:

I do not have the board. I did a search and found the manual and downloaded it and looked at it then deleted it. The manual showed a slot 1 and gave the sizes of the chips which could be installed which I posted. I am just going by what was in that manual.

    Sorry Russ :(

That questions should have been posed to you, Memorex. :)
