I've given a friend a 20gig HDD to use as an external drive. The directions with the enclosure states that the HDD should be set as master.

I had temporarily used this as a slave on my machine and I can't recall whether I had set it to cable select or slave, of course I do not have the paper work that came with the drive.

We've set the jumper to select the two pins closest to the ribbon cable, but when connected to the computer, the drive is not seen.

Would anyone remember if this is the correct setting for this drive?

External drive? USB? If so, the jumper should not affect whether it's detected or not. Make sure he is connecting it correctly w/ the usb enclosure or interface.

JohnB: Thanks for the link. From what I see, we did have *master* selected.

TonyT: I'm not experienced with external enclosures, but this one, an Ultra 31309, has a sticker inside that states the drive should be set to *master* and not *cs*. You are, no doubt, correct, but not having done this before I try to follow instructions. Tried it on my machine with the same result - we hear the *bong* but no drive, as I see when I plug in a flash drive.

Thanks, to both of you for the information!

Rechecking everything, reconnected the ext. HDD to the system - shut everything down - went had a cup of coffee, came back, turned the machine on and there's the ex. dr. in My Comp. Formatted the drive and all looks well.
