    Hi,

I want to map a folder on my C drive to a network drive letter.

so c:\mystufff will also be knowen as z:\

This is just to replicate a system for testing.

And on another point while I am here, How can i reserve a drive letter for a removable storage divce to make sure that when ever it is inserted it will always map to a predifined letter?

    Thanks

Hi ringworm and welcome to the forum.

Re: your mapping question, if you mean you want to map a folder to a network drive letter on the same PC (where the folder is located) I don't think it is possible.

As to the drive letter assignment - 2K will assign the first free drive letter to any new drive so it's mainly a matter of making sure the drive letter you want will be the first free one.

Regarding local folder mapping: You can share the folder that you want to map then just map the drive as normal.
eg If my pc was called Fred and I wanted to map the folder c:\bananas\ I would need to share the folder then go onto the Map Network Drive thingy and in the folder type \\fred\bananas\.

Regarding assigning a removable drive a letter: I have only done the following on a Windows XP computer.
Plug the USB drive into the computer and then go onto Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management. Under the Storage tree select Disk Management. Right click on the USB drive and select Change Drive Letters and Paths.... Press the Change button and select the letter that you want the USB drive to be assigned. I would recommend using a letter after E:. Now whenever the USB drive is plugged into that computer it will always be assigned the same letter.
As I said before, I have only done this on an XP machine, but you might be able to do this on 2000 if that is what you are using.

    Hope that helped you

a60wattfish - thank you for the correction about mapping a local folder. I goofed that one big time. I'd never thought about doing that particular thing and tried before responding - BUT - forgot to share the folder first. Oops.
