Ran across Service Controller XP 2.1, an interesting user interface to manage "Services" for NT based OS's. It provides a single, multi-paneled view to numerous bits of information, including default MS descriptions to each service. Provides a variety of ways to change service status. The most interesting feature(s) is on the lower screen view. As each service is "clicked / highlighted ", it provides the following information / SUGGESTION for the service setting.....
XP --- Default settings for PRO and Home.
SAFE SYSTEM "Configuration that 95% will be able to use.... "
INTERNET GATEWAY "Allow multiple users on a network to share.... "
GAMING " Internet, file print sharing resources and gaming enjoyment.... "
Note... 3rd party installed services have limited descriptions and NO suggestions.

Version 2.1 released in June states "Foolproof, now you cannot disable/Stop system critical services." (Did not have the nerve to TEST that feature). Have not had time to line check each service suggestion against "Black Vipers" site suggestions, but my first views looked very promising :)p dangling carrot  ). Could provide a "fast adjustment" to a time consuming task. Tiny zip download, includes install / uninstall. Would be nice if the column headers were " click / sortable" for installed services.. but hey, it's a free program.

Thanks for the info and link! I'm thinking Service Controller is going on my "Utilities" CD that I take on tech support calls...once I fire it up and learn to use it, that is.

I've set up quite a few new XP systems but a lot of customers don't want to pay for the time it takes to configure all those services for optimal performance and security. Hopefully, Service Controller will solve that problem (for both me and the customers).

I've been using this for a couple of weeks, and it has specific references to Black Viper's site. In just a quick glance at the link you shared, I don't think the two programs are the same. I have been very pleased with the one I got from Snapfiles, and I already burned it onto my "traveling disk" for quick and easy services configuration.

    Cheers from Ohio!

Miz, the one I've been using is self explanatory, and easy to use. It is a real timesaver.

    Hi Johanna

They appear to be the same... same author and program name. Snapfile is May release, if you go to the author's site you can download June 1 version.
With yourself and Miz supporting it, I'll feel comfortable reccommending it.
    :D Thanks :)
