    OS: win2k
    Environment: Desktop
Security apparatus: free versions of: AVG Antivirus, PestPatrol Control, Pop-Up Stopper, Sygate personal firewall

It doesn't happen often but I do get wacked off the internet sometimes. I occurs to me that at one time I would be on the net and all of a sudden I would get cut off from my ISP, then my pc go on a reboot mode. Of course, win2k kicked in and does a CHKDSK - with nothing wrong found. I ran the AV, nothing wrong found. I am sure some malicious online application did it because I could observe the HD's red light moving erratically. Is there anything I can do to ward off such an attack? Or is there a problem with the power supply?

    Thanks for any help provided.

If your power supply is marginal for your requirements, a drop in supply line voltage cannot be ruled out.
I haven't heard of any invasive ads or spy routines that will cause a PC to shut down.

    malicious software

If I recall Spybot - Search & Destroy is a software that identify spywares embedded in the registry without allowing the user to delete the findings. Is this correct?

    No!

You are correct in that it lets you find these things!

You are inncorrect in that it will not let you remove what it finds!

In fact that is what it does, finds them, and then lets you remove them!

Wouldn't be much good if it would not let you remove them!

I downloaded Spyware Nuker (free?) and ran the app. A scan IDed problems that AdAware failed to do, but the hook was Nuker charged to remove. The OP may be referring to a similar situation.

It took awhile but I manually deleted the identified registry and files that were bad.

Why walk when you have a car?

Let SpyBot delete them since that is what it is designed to do, and is the best there is to do it!

Thanks brett. Your link does explain and it does reveal the boldness to trick an unsuspecting and trusting consumer. My experience with Nuker validates that linked article.
Nuker found suspect files and folders that Ad-Aware (failed?) to show. Using a scare tactic Nuker wanted $29.95 to delete. Howwever, with their ID'd problems, I located and deleted some files, empty folders, and didn't remove .dll files.
The info I have now may explain why I had to do a system restore. And it appears I will have to search for Nuker's files and delete.
