I have a new laptop Sony Vaio VPCF1390X with Windows 7 Professional. 64 bit.

I find it goes a bit slow and would like to speed it up for normal file organization.

Some weird things pop up, like asking me to insert the backup cd all the time.

    Suggestion appreciated.

Guessing the specs in your My System is the old machine?

How much ram does the new one have?
You can turn off some of the bells and whistles in Windows to help out.

Decrapifier would be a place to start.

You can of course uninstall all kind of pre-installed software to get the same effect.

I can put the specs of the new machine up when I log on again. I bought it to be as close to a video editing machine as I could afford, so it has at least 4 gigs ram.

    Hi dispatch trophy.

Try following these steps to help make the computer run faster and more efficiently:

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Uninstall a Progam and uninstall any programs that you don't use.
    2. In Control Panel under Programs and Features click the link that says Turn Windows Features On or Off and uncheck all the checkboxes except for Games, Internet Explorer 9, Media Features, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1, Windows Gadget Platform, Windows Search, XPS Services and XPS Viewer. Click Ok when you are done. (If you use a Windows Feature that is listed then don't uncheck its checkbox)
    3. Download and run ATF Cleaner. Save the program to your desktop. Right click it and select Run as Administrator. When it opens select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the empty selected button. Download it from here, ATF Cleaner.
    4. Run Disk Cleanup. Click Start< All Programs< Accessories< System Tools< Right click Disk Cleanup and select Run as Administrator. Once Disk Cleanup finishes calculating how much space it can free up make sure that all the checkboxes are selected. Once all of those checkboxes are selected click the More Options tab and under System Restore and Shadow Copies click the Cleanup button. Click Clean up to delete all of the old System Restore points. Once thats done click the Ok button to perform the requested actions and click Yes when prompted to allow Disk Cleanup to remove unnecessary files on the computer.
    5. Disable any Windows Services that you don't use by following Black Vipers Services Guide.
    6. Download and run Auslogics Disk Defrag. Make sure to uncheck any toolbars in the installtion wizard as they are not needed. After the installation finishes open the program by right clicking on Auslogics Disk Defrag shortcut and selecting Run As Administrator. When you open the program click on Settings< Defrag Priority and select High Priority. Then click on Settings< Program Settings< Algorithms Tab. Select the Delete temporary files before defragmenting checkbox and select the Move system files to the beginning on the disk checkbox. When done click Ok to close the Settings window. When you are ready to start the defragmentation process select the small down arrow next to the word Defrag and select Defrag and Optimize. The process could take a long time so please be patient. Download it from here, Auslogics Disk Defrag.
    7. Download and run Auslogics Registry Defrag. Make sure to uncheck any toolbars in the installtion wizard as they are not needed. After the installation finishes, open the program by right clicking on Auslogics Registry Defrag shortcut and selecting Run As Administrator. When the program opens click the Analyze button. When the process finishes analyzing click the Defrag Registry button followed by clicking the Restart button to finish the registry defrag process. Download it from here, Auslogics Registry Defrag.
    8. Download and run Autoruns. After you download the zipped folder on your desktop, right click the zipped folder and click Extract All. After the folder has been extracted open the regular folder. Run the autoruns.exe program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as Administrator. When you open the program click the Logon Tab and then highlight and remove any programs that you don't need to startup with your computer. Download it from here, Autoruns.
    9. Click Start< Right Click Computer and click Properties. In the System window click the Advanced System Settings button< In the System Properties window on the advanced tab under where it says Performance hit the settings button. In the Performance Options window click the Advanced tab and under Virtual Memory click the Change button. In the Virtual Memory window make sure your harddrive is selected and select the option that says System Managed Size and click the Set button. Now click Ok on the Virtual Memory window to close it. Now in the Performance Options window click the Data Execution Prevention tab and select the option that says Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select. After thats done click Ok on all the windows to close them out and then reboot the computer.
    10. You can disable the Windows Aero Interface if you don't care about all of the glass effects and clear borders for a speed improvement, Disable Aero on Windows 7 or Vista.
    11. Take a look at these simple tweaks to decrease the delay time when opening menus, How to Speed up the Menu Show Delay Time in Windows 7, How to Change the Mouse Hover Time before Pop-up Displays in Windows 7, Speed up Windows 7 Shutdown.
    12. Could you let me know what security programs you have installed?
    13. How many processes are running in Task Manager?

Let me know if the computer is any faster after performing the above steps. :)

I did a full recovery and looked in Windows features. It has these checked:
    Games -- which I unchecked.
    IE 8
    Media Features
    Tablet PC Components
    Remote Differential Compression
    Windows Gadget Platform
    Windows Virtual PC
    XPS services
    XPS viewer

My problem as an amateur end user is that I don't which these does what except for things like games which are self explanatory. But it appears as if most of things you say to uncheck are unchecked.

Microsoft NET Framework has a blue square next to it. I don't know if that means it is activated or not. And I don't know if I need it.

Tablet PC features is used for touch functionality on your computer. You can disable this if you don't use any touch features on your computer.

Remote Differential Compression is used to transfer files over a network. You can disable this if you don't do this.

Windows Virtual PC is used to run Windows OS's in virtual environments. If you don't do this then disable it.

Keep Microsoft .Net Framework how it is.

Expand the Media Features category and uncheck Windows Media Center if you don't use it.

Press Ok when done and then restart the computer when you are prompted.

I still have 2 items to cover from point 11.

But the results so far have been tremendous. One drawback is that the printed words on dialog boxes are very faint and hard to see without straining.

For people who need glasses, this can be a strain.

I think I will go back and see if I can restore stronger graphics visuals in that area.

All the steps have now been completed except for Black Viper. It is way beyond my level and won't have the time to apply it.

    12. since I answered this question last time I have done a complete wipe and reinstall, so now I have no security programs except Windows.

    13. quite a few

the machine is running much faster.

Try this, click Start< Right Click Computer and click Properties. In the System window click the Advanced System Settings button< In the System Properties window on the advanced tab under where it says Performance hit the settings button. On the Visual Effects tab select the option that says Adjust for best appearance. Then click on Ok to save the changes. See if that helps.

Also its good to hear that the computer is running faster than before.

Actually, this is reversing the changes that were recommended to speed up operation, so this might slow things down.

And many of the boxes that get checked when you check the "best appearance" box are for gimmicks like animation and shadows.

All I need is to have the words darker and more readable. I think this is graphics function somewhere.

    Text size:
Right-click any blank space on your Desktop,
    select "Screen Resolution ",
then click "Make text and other other items larger or smaller ".
    Contrast:
Right-click any blank space on your Desktop,
    select "Personalize "
then select one of the four "High Contrast" themes.

If you disable the Windows Aero interface then the option to adjust the computer for better appearence won't make much of a difference. If the option is set to adjust for best performance then you can leave that option where it is. Its up to you. Neither of those options dramatically change the performance in Windows where as disabling the Aero UI has more of an impact.

Anyway, it looks like you are having an issue with the cleartype settings. Take a look here to adjust them to make the text in Windows more readable, Tweak ClearType in Windows 7 for Better Screen Readability.
