I am replacing a NT server with a windows 2000 server. This box is the domain controller for our organization. We only have one domain controller. What do i need to do in order to make this new box the domain controller.

    Thanks

If you want to keep the existing domain, first upgrade your NT box to Windows 2000. Then bring up your new W2K box and run dcpromo on it to make it a domain controller. Then you can do what you want with the old box (demote it to a member server, take it offline, etc...)

If the old box does not meet the requirements of Windows 2000, install Windows NT on your new box (that you want W2K on eventually). Promote your new NT box to be a PDC (thus demoting your old PDC to a BDC) and upgrade your new box to Windows 2000. Then, once again, you can do what you want with the old NT box.

You can also just create a new domain on the new W2K box and migrate your accounts, data, etc... but doing so will probably mean more down time for your users.
