    Hello all!

I have started using MailWasher (free) in an attempt to releave my workload sorting/deleting spam. I have used it for two weeks and after this short time, I have ~650 blacklisted addresses.

My plan was to monitor MailWasher for a couple of weeks and then set it to automatically delete blacklisted but ...... ...... every now and then, a legitimate message that isn't blacklisted gets ticked "blacklisted" and if "auto" had been checked, the e-mail would have been lost.

What settings do experienced MW users recommend?

    Delete?

    Delete + Blacklist?

    Delete + Blacklist + Bounce?

Automatic deletion (assuming that my incidents are "freak accidents ")?

Do You use the friends list?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

    Don't bounce

Don't waste time and bandwidth by using the bounce option, with regards to the other options Firetrust has a good forum with plenty of help and advice from users located Here .
I have used it for a long time now and would not be without it.

I've used it for a couple of years and obviously like it. I never had much luck letting it mark things for me since I caught it in a couple of mistakes. I advise taking a good look before punching the Process Mail button since it's a done deal after that and no return possible. It blacklisted things that weren't selected by me so I dumped the whole list. I would recommend using the friends list and entering a select group of contacts that you would NEVER reject. I don't do that however, I guess I don't have such friends. :)

AFAIK, it will not delete ANY messages until you punch that button.

My big appreciation for it is from not having to download into OE and go through the delete ritual there. It's a big click saver.

    Guys,
    thanks for Your input!

    alboy,
since most spam come from fake addresses, it seems like wasted time to bounce and I would actually become a spammer myself.

I'll visit that forum, thanks for the tip!

    'dude,
it seems like You have made the same experience as I have, MW makes mistakes. I think that the "auto" option really isn't an option.

I think that I'll keep the blacklist, though, since it is easier to uncheck a few mistakes than to check the lot for deletion.

Nowhere in Tools > Options, have I set it to "mark for bounce" for any type of message, neither in the blacklist nor in the filters. Yet, it marks several messages for bounce ...... ...... why does it and is there a way to fix it?

    Thanks,
    Christer

Go into Tools, then accounts and then select an account and head to properties - there are something like 3 tabs there and I believe its in advanced options on the second or third tab. As you probably have discovered, you can import your address book directly to the white list. I like to see whats going to get trashed, so I leave the "hide" spam option off and I've enabled both of the standard filters and also subscribe to the First Alert database - those I leave hidden because they've been double checked before they ever get to me. People can argue about spam related programs, but this is one puppy I wouldn't be without. A real time saver and sure cuts down on the BS mail.

    ;)

    Hi Rockster2U!

There is always one spot that I miss when searching for options and in Tools > Accounts > Properties > Bouncing & outgoing mail, there was a check box for "Enable bouncing of messages from this account ". I unchecked it and that should take care of it ...... :p ...... time will tell.

It seems like importing the Address book is available only in the PRO version ...... :( ...... !

Now, I'm going to search for information on the First Alert database.

    Thanks,
    Christer

My advice - Spend the $30 for Pro or $37 for Pro with First Alert - one of the best investments that can be made. Test drive it for a while if you have any doubts, but it beats anything I've ever seen.

    ;)

I didn't know there was a free version of mailwasher. I know you can download a 30 day free trial of Mailwasher Pro????

    MailWasher Free v2.0.40

It doesn't have all the bells and whistles such as learning capability and First Alert but it sure beats manual deleting!

    Jayt36,
Your question prompted a google search and I found information that I didn't find on the Firetrust site.

I was under the impression that the trial version worked free for a month and if no pay, no play after that.

This thread at Castlecops indicates that after the trial month, it reverts to a free version of a more recent vintage than the one I'm using.

Christer, thanks for the download link. I think the info on Castlecops is incorrect (with maybe the exception of the comment by the mod). I installed Mailwasher Pro on a friends computer and after 30 days, it simply stopped working. I use the paid version on my computer and wouldn't be without it. :)

    Jayt36,
    You're welcome ...... :) ...... !

That was my assumption until I read that thread at Castlecops. You're right that the mod kind of contradicts the other guy, well, not directly but by not confirming his statement.

    Thanks to You too!
