Before I had to re-register with my ISP (Sympatico), I was notified by a ding and an icon, telling me I had a message, in my Netscape Messenger, 4.7.

I can't even find the place where I set that preference. I can see it in my mind, but can't find it in the "edit" preferences.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Pat

    Hi Pat,

Look here for your Mail Notification sound:

    Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups
Enable: Play sound when message arrives

To select which wav file you wish to play:
Start | Settings | Control Panel | Sounds

    Scroll down to:
    New Mail Notification
Select the sound file by clicking on the "Browse" button

I knew there was a reason that I couldn't find it. It's not there. I've been in that screen many times. There is no "enable ".

There is: identity, mail servers, newsgroup servers, addressing, messages, window settings, copies and folders, formatting, return receipts, disk space.

That's it. I've set that enable a few times in the past, but I'll be darned if I can find it now.

    Tiresome, isn't it? :)

    Thank you.

    Pat,

I must not have been clear:

    Highlight Mail & Newsgroups

In the right pane of the "Settings for Mail & Newsgroups" window, scroll down to the last section

    The first entry is:
"Play sound when messages arrive "
There is a white box to the left of this option
Click on that white box, which will "enable" the option.

What I meant by "Enable" was to put a tick in the white box to the left of the option.

Ha ha ha......I'm so sorry, Romana. Of course it is there. I was "looking and not seeing ". However, as has happened occasionally in the past, the notification is not working. It seems to take fits and starts of not working.

It is checked. Maybe it will start again on its own.

    Thank you.

    Pat,

I knew you could find it! ;)

Did you designate a sound file in the Control Panel | Sounds
    New Mail Notification?

Yes. I checked the sounds in the control panel, and the mail notification has the speaker next to it. I had chosen wave as the sound. I clicked on the preview a few times and it made its' nice little sound.

I'll just have to wait and see if it starts working again. Computers, particularly, Netscape, have their "off days ". :)

    Thank you.

After going to Control Panel, Sounds, yesterday, and taking the speaker off of mail notification, then putting it back again, today I have the sound back . It was like giving the darn thing a poke.

Stupid little things aren't they? :)
