I never can tell when I have mail unless I manually check. The little envelope on the bottom left of the browser usually never changes.. even then you have to have a page of the browser open to see the envelope.

On older version's of Netscape this wasn't a problem.. .They showed I had mail on my task bar, even if the browser wasn't open.

Also, is there a way to change the meek email notification sound. That little ping that it makes is not enough for me.
I would like to change the sound to something like thunder. :)

    Thanks

If you want email notification on all the time there's shortcut for that in the Netscape group in the start menu. Look in the sub group "utilities" for mail notification. It may be a bit different than that as I have long ago deleted that group from my start menu and am doing this from memory (which isn't always so good) :) When you click on it you will see the icon in the system tray appear. Right click on it to get at the options and you can choose the sound you want to play from there. If the shortcut isn't in your start menu the file you need to run is called Nsnotify.exe. It's located in the netscape\communicator\program folder.

I searched for Nsnotify.exe, there is none?

No short cut in start menu for mail notifications.. I had that in the older version of Communicator.

    Note: I'm using Netscape 6.2.

    arkie,

See if this copy of NSNOTIFY.EXE helps. If you don't have a version of Communicator installed, then you wouldn't have nsnotify.

    Hi Ramona:

I downloaded/installed NSNOTIFY.EXE. It shows on my taskbar but Xed out. Click on options says "unable to complete because file NSMAILUI.DLL not found "

The post above for the site on page details said to make a copy of "netscp6.exe ", I don't have that file.
    I have these files:
    NETSCP6.EXE-194CBA96.pf
    NETSCP6.EXE-25AIDEE7.pf

Another strange thing, Edit menu, Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings, doesn't always show on my screen? It should be right above Preferences.
    See my screen shot:

    Thanks

    arkie,

Those .pf files have to do with prefetching. There should be something in the MS Knowledge Base about it. You may want to take a look at your \windows\prefetch directory, and your \windows\prefetch\layout.ini file if you are curious. A post in the XP forum might be good too.

With the latest mozilla, the mail & newsgroups account settings menu item only shows when I use mail or news. Does N6 show the same behavior?

Didn't find any "prefetch" in Windows?

You are correct... the mail & newsgroups account settings menu item only shows when mail or news are used.

    Thanks

    Hi arkie,

Well, you've left me in the wind, as far as Windows XP goes! Do you want to continue pursuing this? If so, here is the NSMAILUI.DLL

I'll try to get in touch with the person who posted this fix, and find out which OS he uses.

    Thanks, I installed the NSMAILUI.DLL .

Now I can open options but it doesn't allow me to make changes. After I make a change it changes back to the default?

    NSNOTIFY is still not working.

    Just says, unable to run.

Does it matter where NSNOTIFY.EXE is installed?

    Nsnotify.exe and nsmailui.dll should both be placed in C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 6 folder.

I did a search on the Netscape 6 Newsgroup for Mail Notification, and saw this post:

    1) Copy NsNotify.exe and NsMailUI.dll from the old communicator\programs directory and put into the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape6 directory.

    2) Add a shortcut to the NsNotify.exe file into your Start\Programs\Startup menu folder.

    3) Run this program from the Startup menu to test.

You might also give this a try. I don't use Mail & Newsgroups in NS 6.2.1, so haven't tested it myself.

    FWIW,

    Ramona

    Completed items 1 and 2.

I ran the program from the Startup menu to test.
It comes on the task bar, still Xed out, when I try Run Mail I get this message:

    Unable to run Netscape Mail " "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 6\netscape.exe "-mail "

Shows in my start menu with Netscape 6.2 but doesn't start when Netscape starts or when computer starts.

    Thanks

Read this thread. Evidently it does work but I wonder if you have to have NS 4 installed to be able to configure it properly. I did some playing around with this on another drive that doesn't have any netscape installed. I ran into the same problems as you so I copied the whole NS 4.78 folder to the same location as I have NS 4.78 on the other drive. I could be wrong but I'm assuming nsnotify get's it's config from the prefs.js file so doing this would put it and everything else where it's supposed to be. It still wouldn't work (no mail server listed in the options) so I'm guessing that it either get's it's config from the registry or else it goes to the registry to find the location of the prefs.js file and being that NS 4 wasn't installed, the registry entries aren't there which would be the same in your case. Did this make any sense to you? :) I could be wrong about this but I've been following this thread and thought I would post what I've found. Do you have ICQ installed. If so, it has a mail checking feature you could use. I'm guessing that some of the other instant messenger programs probably do too. There's also a lot of mail checking programs available for download if you snoop around a bit. Don't have a link for any right now as I don't personally use one. Hope I'm wrong about all this, but....

    Hi arkie and Zander,

Interesting theory Zander, and you could be right! In fact, I may test your theory.

I decided to install NS 6.2.1 with Mail, and see if I could get this workaround going.

I copied nsnotify.exe and nsmailui.dll into the Netscape 6 folder. Then I copied and renamed netscp6.exe to netscape.exe, then placed it into the Netscape 6 folder.

I logged on the Internet, Opened Windows Explorer, and in the Netscape 6 folder double clicked nsnotify.exe, to activate the feature.

Next, I opened Netscape 6 Mail, answered NO when asked to make it the default Mail, entered my password, then sent myself an email.

Sure enough, in about 10 minutes that little red flag was waving like crazy. Clicked on "Run Mail" and it took me to the NS 6 Mail window. It will work, or at least on Windows 98SE, with 4.79 also installed.

arkie, did you figure out which of your netscp6.exe files to use? If so, I would be interested in that information, so I can add it to my web page.

    Ramona :D

Well at least we know it does work. Don't know how you would ever know for sure if my theory is right. Maybe I'll download NS6 and install it on the other drive just to see. Guess that's the reason I have it anyway; just to experiment and play with. :)

    Zander,

Best place to get 6.2.1 with Mail:

    SillyDog701 Streamlined Version

    Read about it HERE

Keep me posted on the results. I really love getting into this stuff, how 'bout you?

Thanks for the links Ramona. If arkie hasn't got it working by the time I'm done messing with it I'll post back and let you know what I found. Got nothing else to do today as I'm a little under the weather so I'm just going to hide in the house all day. No ice fishing for me today. :( Oh, I have to agree with you about getting into this stuff. Kinda fun! :)

    Zander,

One other detail I noted: when I enabled nsnotify.exe for 4.79 the Target was Netscape 6. So you will need to check that setting after implementing the workaround for Netscape 6.

Cheers, and hope you feel better soon! ;)

    Ramona

P.S. Which OS are you running?
