    Hi All,

Number 48 of Mozella 1.0 and Netscape 7, Help and Tips, http://techaholic.net/ns7.html, addresses a problem that I seem to have with a recently installed 12 meg NS 7.0. The Mail Notification only appears after I have opened the Read Mail. This seems to be putting the horse behind the cart. With NS 4.79, visual and audio signals appear when new mail is available with the Netscape (or web) page open.

Since I have tried all the combinations,by checking and/or unchecking, in the Server Settings of:
Check for new mail at startup,
Check for new messages every (x) minutes,
    Automatically download any new messages,
with the audio or visual signal still delayed, I'm confused. Is this a "bug ", or has anyone else encountered (fixed) this condition?

I believe the mail alert only works while you have the mailer open. Otherwise nothing. However, others (paging Ramona) may know more since they use the mailer and I do not.

    Hi derfsch,

Yes, it is a bug in Netscape 7.0. Mail notification only works if you have the Mail window open.

You can use the Help|Feedback Center feature in the browser, or THIS feedback link to express your opinion on the absence of this feature.

I have a workaround for this, however, if you're interested. You can read about it HERE. Most users have had success using the workaround.

    tranquilo and Ramona,

Thank you for your help. Using Ramona's work around, the mail indicators performed as she stated, with one glitch. After the mail has been read, deleted or sent to a folder, the waving red flag stays on and when the cursor is put on the envelope icon the popup says "you have one message waiting." This condition remains after the mail screen is closed and even after Netscape is shut down. This situation lasts for about three minutes and then the envelope icon returns with the message, "There are no new messages waiting."

I can live with the work around condition, since it now provides the indication of new mail and I'm sure the mail indicator situation will be fixed in later upgrades. I did use the feedback link to inform Netscape of the delayed mail indicator in Netscape 7.0. Thank you again.

The workaround described by Ramona sounds like a good ides-I have one problem--I have Nestscape 7 and no where can I find out if netscape Communicator 4.x is part of it. I have no previous Netscape versions installed

    Welcome to the Forum, Janlar!

    Hi Janlar,

Netscape Communicator 4.x is not a component of Netscape 7.0. Communicator is a unique program, and neither is Netscape 7.0 an upgrade to 4.x.

In essence, you must have the Communicator 4.x program installed on your system in order for NSNotify to work for Netscape 7.0.

This is a mail notification workaround only if you are running Communicator, and lots of us still keep the program on our system. Kind of like that pair of favorite baggy, soft, warm, sweat pants you know you should get rid of but just can't! ;)
