Hope someone can help me out there. I'm running XP Pro with 256 Mgb RAM, and whenever I try to open the mail icon in the control panel I receive a 'not enough memory or system resources' message. All other icons open without trouble. This is driving me nuts! I'm not particularly technical, so any help would be really appreciated - the simpler the better!

Only the control panel icon for making changes to your mail setup?

What email app do you use?

Try it to generate the error again and then click on start~run and put eventvwr.msc on the line and click OK to open your event viewer.

Check in both the system and the applications log files for errors or warnings that look related. Post any/all you find that happened about the time of your error to this thread. Easiest is to click open the event, click on the icon below the up/down arrows to send a copy to your clipboard, and then post the event in here. You can delete all of the bottom 'data' part.

    Newt ...

I've got 1 GB of RAM, and I've gotten that same message since day one ... "You need more memory or system resources. Close some windows and try again. "

Seems to have nothing to do with the ability to use email, though. Don't know about faxes.

DB9 What else is running when you get the error messages? Are you trying to do another task? While 256 is considered adequate for XP, XP performs better with more memory.

    Jim
I had 512 for a year, and have run 1 gig for over a year and have NEVER gotten that message. Two things occur to me:
    Pagefile too small
Less than 25% free space in OS partition

The only other thing I would suspect would be programs that a user didn't realize were running, and were taking system resources, but I'm sure you can identify every running process in YOUR Task Manager. Is this error with your desktop, laptop or both?

    DB9 ...

Why, exactly, are you trying to access whatever is opened with the Mail and Fax CP applet? (I get the same message, so I don't know what's opened.) Email works perfectly on my system, although I don't send or receive faxes from my computer.

I think the error message is largely meaningless for all practical purposes.

    Johanna ...

It doesn't appear that either of your suggestions has any bearing on the matter.

More than 33% of my OS partition is free.

I had been using a custom Paging File (1024 MB) on only one partition, so changed to a system managed file on each partition, just to see what effect it might have ... after rebooting, I still get the error message.

Strangely enough, the Mail and Fax icon doesn't even appear in the Control Panel on my laptop, and I don't have it hidden. Nor does there appear to be anything in Services or Group Policies concerning it.

As I said above, I think the error message is largely meaningless for all practical purposes.

AFAIK, that mail icon only appears when you have MS Office or printer/scanner/fax software that triggers it.

So what? It's a nuisance, and there ought to be a way to stop it. Have either of you looked at Kellys-Korner? I would, but I have four restless hot kids in a big hurry to get to the pool. lol

So, don't click on it. (Reminds me of the guy who went to the doctor, saying "Doc, it only hurts when I press here ". Doctor's response: "So, don't press there. ") :D

    Mail icon problem

Thanks to all for replying so quickly. I forgot to mention I'm using Outlook Express 6. Newt, here's what I came up with for Applications:
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: PerfNet
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 2002
    Date: 6/10/2004
    Time: 5:22:11 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: E4P7P1
    Description:
Unable to open the Redirector service. Redirector performance data will not be returned. Error code returned is in data DWORD 0.

    ...and for System:
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Service Control Manager
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 7003
    Date: 6/10/2004
    Time: 5:45:01 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: E4P7P1
    Description:
The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service depends on the following nonexistent service: LanmanWorkstation

My email works fine as well, it just irritates the hell out of me, and I was worried that I might have a serious problem. Maybe I just shouldn't press that spot!
