School system running an old 16bit database SIMS (student information management system) on XP machines. Not sure what dB engine is being used but it's a typical 'pick a menu item number by keying the number' app.

They are looking for a utility that will allow creation of keystroke macros to genereate SIMS reports (8-10 different but static reports) within the VDM where/while SIMS is running.

As usual with schools, free is great but cheap would work.

Newt, I used to use PTFB way back when it was freeware and it worked splendidly! I just did a Google for it and find that it's free for trial now but you must pay for continued use. I don't know if you can still find the freebie hanging somewhere but maybe that's a possibility. Then again, let them pay the price if it suits their purpose.

    Thanks guys. Looks interesting.

One small problem from the description though. The dB menus want a number keypress to pick the menu item. Too old to have nice buttons you can click.

I can't tell for sure but it doesn't look like PTFB takes any input other than mouse clicks unless they just forgot to mention it.

The Pro version "More Information" area says it does keyboard actions as well. I'm just not all that sure about it working on a VDM app though. Free to try!

Thanks. AFAIK, any old DOS-style 16bit app is gonna run in a VDM unless I'm missing something.

You are correct. That is, if it run at all. :) I seriously doubt that PTFB can track beyond the GUI and into a VDM mode. I'd love to be proven wrong.

    Good luck.
