ma CPU is H O T !

    hi ppl
    my problem is driving me nuts
    im using a pentium d 3.4 duo core
    on an intel 946GZ MB
    & the original cpu fan is installed....
    the case is mercury (not sure which model but it has a good fan)
    the temp of my cpu wont go below 68 & fan speed is always over 4500 rpm
    even though i'm not running anything AT ALL
    so what is the solution
    its noisy & freakin me out
    i'd appreciate any advice

    Did you build the computer yourself? It sounds like the thermal compound between the CPU and the heat sink is ineffective.

    Consider replacing it with Arctic Silver.

    Case fans all running? Air in at the front, out of the back?

    Are you overclocking?

    Check if there is a rogue program (service?) causing the CPU to run at 100% constantly. Look under the performance tab in Task Manager.

    If you purchased the computer from a store, the case probobly only has one exhaust fan... Consider installing some intakes, possibly resetting the heatsink with artic silver or getting a new heatsink w/ a more powerful fan. Also... how hot is your house? It makes a huge difference. In my appartment the air is covered in the rent price so I keep my room at 68* or so... At my parents house it's more like 80* in the house... and my comp goes from 52*C to 66*C just because of that.
