    Hey,

I found this site via google, and thought maybe someone could help me shed some light on the situation.

I upgraded two system to windows vista ultimate. They are FRESH CLEAN installs, on new hard drives. No "OS upgrade ".

It is also important to note that I am using the 64 bit version of the OS

And, when Im using the system, I get a blue screen of death regarding luafv.sys, it performs a memory dump, then reboots.

The only thing the two machines have in common in terms of hardware is a U.S. Robotics 56K dial-up modem, I chose it because it had x64 drivers

Software is similar, Norton Internet Security 2007, A few instant messengers, Installed necessary stuff, like Mozilla Firefox, and Adobe Reader, Microsoft Office etc... (the BSOD happens both before and after I installed Norton 07).

I have no Idea what could be wrong! I've heard that issues related to luafv.sys are hardware... but, could it really be my modem? Or a random coincidence that another piece of hardware in each machine is causing issue. One has a Gigabyte mobo, the other has an MSI. One has an XFX GeForce, one has an MSI ATI for video, latest drivers on everything.

Does anyone have ANY idea whats wrong?

Well, I downloaded the debugger tools, but, all I get is a report saying that the symbols that I have installed are not correct, so It cant display it properly....

BUT I am 95% sure I've got the problem licked.

I noticed that it was only when I was online, or only after I had an internet connection (these are brand new installs, so 90% of the time I was on the PC I was connected online, for Windows Updates, driver downloads, Virus definition updates etc...) And, obviously, since I have a dial-up modem, I dont live in an area where high speed is availible.

I just know that, before I upgraded, neither modem in the machines would support 64 bit according to their websites.... So, I looked at a US robotics modem, that had XP x64 Windows Signed drivers for download, So I assumed that would be a good bet so early in the game of trying to find 64 bit vista drivers.

To my surprise, Vista had BUILT IN drivers from microsoft (x64 obviously), from August. But, I had already downloaded the ones from US Robotics website, so I used those, because those were signed and released in December of 06... and It did update the Device name from the Generic "US Robotics 56K Fax Modem" to a lengthy name include its v92 capabilities...

But... considering it was the only hardware the two machines had in common, I figured it wouldnt HURT to try to roll back the driver to the windows default... sure enough... I did it on one machine, and havent had a blue screen yet. Did it on the other machine, and, no blue screens there either! Im fairly certain its fixed... because it was crashing at least once per hour.
