uninstalled it in order to reinstall it but it isn't available in the
installable protocols list. how must I do?

It would be really odd if Client for Microsoft Networks was there since it isn't a network protocol. It is normally listed under "clients" I think.

What problem caused you to remove it?

I can't say for sure since I've never heard of anyone uninstalling that particular piece but it certainly shouldn't have vanished as a bit you can install.

If it has, remove the NIC from device manager, shut down and remove the physical NIC, reboot, shut down again and add the NIC, reboot once more, and when you are prompted to add it, you should have all the usual options available including Client for Microsoft Networks.

yes, you're right!! it's under the client! sorry!
strange thing remains: I can't find the share print and folder in any library ...
    do I really need it?
I've only the client for microsoft, the Netbeui and tcp/ip but both computer can't ping each other.
I've uninstalled all because I couldn't share the adsl connexion and I wanted to restart all the intallation. Now even the lan doesn't work!!
I've some other questions about dns and dns suffix: do I have to activate it and add one in the ID properties?
should I put the serveur IP in the dns field of the client?
What must I activate in the advanced DNS properties?
About the wins properties, do I have to add the serveur IP? LMHOST search is activated, and the NetBios on tcp/ip also on both computers... what's wrong with me???
    thanks

appius - the answer to most of your questions is "it depends on what kind of network and internet connection you are using" so please describe your system.

If both PCs have an IP address and subnet mask that place them in the same subnet, they should be able to ping each other by address and probably by computer name. However, ping is a TCP/IP command and if NetBeui is set up properly but TCP/IP is not, the PCs can work with each other but none of the IP commands (ping, net view, etc.) will work. NetBeui doesn't understand such things.

So I guess you had bettter include the workgroup name, computer names, IP addresses, and subnet masks you are using when describing your network.

    sorry, you're right.
I'm just trying to connect two pc runnig with W2K and then to share the connection of my adsl usb modem without a hub, by ICS.
so, here are the actual settings:
server ID is "crincrin ", wich is also its Netbios name. it has no DNS suffix and I haven't activated the modification of suffix.
here is its ipconfig/all (sorry, it's in french, but not very hard to understand I guess) :

    Configuration IP de Windows 2000

    Nom de l'hôte . . . . . . . . . . : crincrin
    Suffixe DNS principal . . . . . . :
    Type de noud. . . . . . . . . . . : Diffuser
    Routage IP activé . . . . . . . . : Oui
    Proxy WINS activé . . . . . . . . : Non

Ethernet carte Connexion au réseau local :

Suffixe DNS spéc. à la connexion. :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast E
    ernet NIC
    Adresse physique. . . . . . . . . : 00-E0-4C-E4-F3-02
    DHCP activé . . . . . . . . . . . : Non
    Adresse IP. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
    Masque de sous-réseau . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Passerelle par défaut . . . . . . :
    Serveurs DNS. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.252.19.3
    192.252.19.4
(=THE 2 DNS OF MY PROVIDER)

    PPP carte connexion adsl :

Suffixe DNS spéc. à la connexion. :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface
    Adresse physique. . . . . . . . . : 00-53-45-00-00-00
    DHCP activé . . . . . . . . . . . : Non
    Adresse IP. . . . . . . . . . . . : 80.14.201.93
    Masque de sous-réseau . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
    Passerelle par défaut . . . . . . : 80.14.201.93
    Serveurs DNS. . . . . . . . . . . : 193.252.19.3
    193.252.19.4
    NetBIOS sur Tcpip . . . . . . . . : Désactivé

    protocole and services are:
    client for microsoft network
    printer and folder sharing
    NetBEUI
and I have recently add the NWLink/IPX andNWLinkNetBIOS in order to play a multiplayer game that couldn't run with TCP/IP as it sould. As a matter of fact, it seems the TCP/IP doesn't work and that the lan works thanks to the others protocols. Both computers can't ping each other.

the client as the same ID properties (but an other name of couse)
    and same protocols.
about the tcp/ip parameters, I've tried lots of options.
    this is the last one:
    Configuration IP de Windows 2000

    Nom de l'hôte . . . . . . . . . . : skip
    Suffixe DNS principal . . . . . . :
    Type de noud. . . . . . . . . . . : Mélangé
    Routage IP activé . . . . . . . . : Non
    Proxy WINS activé . . . . . . . . : Non

Ethernet carte Connexion au réseau local :

Suffixe DNS spéc. à la connexion. :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL813
    Ethernet NIC
    Adresse physique. . . . . . . . . : 00-E0-4C-E2-2B
    DHCP activé . . . . . . . . . . . : Oui
    Autoconfiguration activée . . . . : Oui
    Autoconfiguration d'adresse IP. . : 169.254.170.20
    Masque de sous-réseau . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
    Passerelle par défaut . . . . . . :
    Serveurs DNS. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.252.19.3
    192.252.19.4

I've also tryed to give it a fix ip and the server ip as dns and gateway, but internet connection remains still dead on it.

I have no more idea. thanks for your patience!

ok, I've finally formated and reinstalled W2K, everything's fine now. I had ZoneAlarme badly uninstalled, seems it was the reason of those troubles.
thank a lot for your help.
