Using Netscape 7.1, I have been storing my e-mail on our server through a mapped network drive, Y:. The IT guys changed some network architecture over the weekend, and my mapped network drive is now the H: drive.

Upon booting up Netscape mail client, it could not find my local subfolders (not surprisingly).

I then deleted all the .msf and prefs.js files in both my local Mozilla directory and also in the e-mail local folders directory on the H: drive, but no dice. It will recognize the main folders, and I can see the contents of those folders, and it even will recognize test folders that I place in the directories, but it will not pick up the .sbd folders in the client.

I tried creating a new user profile and copying over the non .msf files and those as outlined in this FAQ, but still no luck.

I think I am overlooking something dumb, as I have had success with similar redirecting projects before (new hard drive).

Local Directory points to the Local Folders on the mapped H: drive where the e-mail folder/subfolders are located.

I've tried pointing the Server Settings to the .slt folder, the mail subfolder folder in the .slt folder, and the H: drive local folder, and still no luck.

I can see the .sbd folders in the H: drive folder as well as their contents, so I know they exist. I just can't get the client to recognize them.

    Help?

    Thanks,

    Todd

FYI, it seems that I inadvertenty kept writing over my own files while trying to salvage them. This stems from a basic misunderstanding of the various importance of the Mozilla extensions.

Perhaps if this can be added to the FAQ for other people's benefit, and perhaps in bold text:

.SNM files are disposable and will be rewritten by the e-mail program
.MSF files are disposable and will be rewritten by the e-mail program

THE ONLY FILES THAT ARE IRREPLACEABLE ARE THE DATA FILES WITH NO EXTENSION. They are listed as Files only in the Windows Explorer Details View. Not MSF File or SNM File, just File.

So if you are trying to fix an e-mail directory that is not appearing correctly in the program, BACKUP ALL OF THE FILES WITH NO EXTENSION FIRST. These are you actual e-mail files, and the MSF and SNM files are only used by the e-mail program as directions on where everything is stored in relation to each other. They are meaningless as far as the user is concerned.

Netscape will overwrite data files if they are in folders with the same default names as used by the program (InBox, Sent, etc.) if you go to open these folders in the client. At least that is what it appeared to do with me. SNM and MSF files remained, but data files were erased.

Hopefully this can save others from the same catastrophe.

    Todd,
too bad that you were not aware of Ramona's Netscape Solutions . The link which I gave deals with that matter.
Just one extra item. The prefs.js file should not be deleted, unless you have a backup, and it should not be reused, if you create a brand new profile.
The .snm files are only for Netscape4.x and earlier, while the .msf files are the equivalent header files for the newer programs.
Header files are created from the existing UNIX style files with no extention, and all work should be done with the program closed from Windows Explorer.
