    Help, no "search "..
New to Win 2000. My "search" "for files and folders" button does NOTHING when I click on it. Just closes the start menu. Any suggestions???

The "search" piece is the same as you get with windows explorer when you go to search. Does that one work?

To fix any possible problems with system files, go to start~run and do sfc /scannow and let it examine your system. You will need the 2K install CD if it finds problems and wants to fix them. Helpful at best. Harmless at worst.

Also, if you right-click the My Computer icon and go to manage, you will find an event viewer. Look in both the system and the applications event logs for possibly related problems. Since there is probably tons of non-related stuff in there now, I suggest
    - setting the filter to show only problems (failure audit, warnings, errors)
    - clearing the event log of it's current contents
    - rebooting and taking a look to see if problems occur then
    - trying the start~search thing and checking again for errors
