I use Thunderbird, but a colleague who uses Outlook Express is complaining that after accidentally opening some dubious email, and then 'not being able to get out of there' - when he did actually get out, he found that the little 'replied' arrows alongside his Inbox emails list (which indicate at a glance which ones he has already replied to) had disappeared. No arrows, so he needs to go to his Sent Folder each time to see if he has replied or not (not sure if this indicates early onset dementia, or he gets and replies to a hell of a lot of emails - but nomatter, he finds them useful).

I found some sort of answer for Outlook - but can find nothing regarding Outlook Express - and - as he's still without his arrows, I guess the Outlook solution didn't work.

Has anyone any experience of this problem? Knows what to do about it?

(Oh yes - I did issue the usual advice about searching for malware, etc, etc)

Thanks TonyT - I tried that, looking at my wife's version of OE - but the required option does not appear to be there. And my interlocutor had tried it before, too, without finding or identifying the appropriate option, after I had suggested it as being a 'solution' offered for Outlook which might work for Outlook Express.

Two thoughts occur (1) the original question - as put to me - was not framed accurately and precisely (and not being a user of OE myself, I'm not quite sure what a 'replied' arrow actually looks like and what it might be called/where found, in the options available) (2) different versions of OE (and possibly in different countries, too) may provide different options: (a) we are in the UK (b) my interlocutor may be using an older version of OE; he didn't specify which version he's using.

I think I'll just tell him to clear Internet caches, compact mail, then export all his mail and account(s) settings, then create a new identity, and then import the old mail etc, back into the new identity in OE. This (allegedly) should set whatever version of OE he is using back to its default for this new identity. A little knowledge (mine) can be a very dangerous thing, so if anyone thinks this might be unwise advice - please shout. The guy is not back till Friday, so I have a few days.

Rt click any field to produce a menu with : Sort Ascending, Sort Descending, Columns.

Select "Columns" and then Flag. I believe "Flag" is the item he is looking for. The fields can be moved "up or down ", which equates to left or right in the header row.

Don't instruct him to do anything EXCEPT to explain to you exactly what his problem is. Have him take a screenshot of his OE window and he can even draw "where the icon is supposed to be ".

Thanks TonyT - That sounds as if it will solve his problem - and I will pass it on!

Actually that will not resolve the problem - Flag is entirely different to the indication that a message has been replied to - screenshot. Clicking in the Flag column puts a flag against that email.

I suggest your friend re-registers OE and it's associated library files as outlined here ...

    An OE Basic Repair Kit

There is no point in running the regsvr32 msjava.dll as msjava no longer exists in XP

Mmm - PeteC to the rescue again!
Thanks Pete. You know what? I've sent him a link to this forum (the very thread, in fact)... Maybe he'll pick it up. Though - bit like the friend with the BMW bike in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (c1960s, late - strongly recommended, still) - some people just don't like to get down and dirty...
