Ok, i have an oldish computer that would not start up at all (kids wrecked it). i could get into the bootup screen but no matter what option i picked, i could not get in and it would just keep going back to the same screen. eventually i got sick of trying, popped in the disk and chose boot from cdrom. this installed windows all over again. all is working fine now but all the photos that was on there is no-where to be found. can anyone help me as i know its there somewhere but i cannot remember how to retrieve them or where to even go look for them

Would you please confirm the nature of the Windows CD you used - was it a retail copy or a Recovery disk?

If it was a retail copy did you make a Repair install of Windows or a fresh install with format?

A Recovery CD inevitably reformats the drive.

If the drive has been reformatted, which I rather suspect, then I am the bearer of bad news - the pictures and all other personal data on the computer is lost :(

However some steps you can take .....

Download AgentRansack - a freeware search engine more powerful than that in Windows and search the drive for *.jpg - I'm assuming that the pictures are jpegs - highly likely. If this fails to find the pictures your last resort is to use a File Recovery program which may possibly be able to recover some files.

I suggest Smart File Recovery (freeware), but would not build up your hopes too much.

I am sure that you will now realise the importance of maintaining a current backup of all important data on an external device - DVD/CD, USB drive ....

ahhh yes. Compaq? HP? If so, and it was a non-destructive recovery then you're in luck. They're in your old profile under C:\Documents and Settings\

If not, there's an awesome program out there called "GetDataBack ". Best recovery program going for the price.. You can try the trial first. It's insanely good and I've used it to recover data from formatted drives and even drives that have been wiped out and Windows reinstalled.

The other one I use is Easus Data Recovery Wizard Professional. Great program, deadly effective, tad pricey.
