    Dear Folks,

Help save my marriage! I have been tearing my hair out for a week on this one. I had a strange "crash" in Netscape 4.74 that disabled my profile but left my wife's profile OK. When I tried to logon as myself the Netscape homepage would come up and just freeze.
I tried reinstalling but that didn't work.
    I tried "upgrading" to 6.2 - ditto
I then started getting "D:\\archive and D:\\Cache directories don't exist" messages and no home page at all plus then an "illegal op" message.
I finally renamed my old profile and it's D:\Netscape\Communicator\Prfile name\Mail... folder and created a new one and that got me up and running!
The problem - ALL MY LOCALLY stored folders and mail and address book are GONE!! Hundreds of work-related emails and addresses etc. ugh! The usual *.slt files have appeared in the mail directory. The bookmark file is there but when I move it to the new profile directory it doesn't work. I ran Norton and came up w 107 errors! Looks as though I had some sort of physical corruption. I updated my .dat and ran MCafee but no viruses. All my other apps run fine.
I do regular backups on a directory where I dump all my work but of course never thought to back up the local drive Email - Free Pizza to any one who can fix this!!!

    Welcome to the Forum, JohnnyB

    Hi JohnnyB,

    Help save my marriage!

Have you spoken with Dr. Ruth? ;)

    Open Netscape and look at:
Edit|Preferences|Advanced|Cache Ensure that you have set the correct path to your Netscape Cache folder. Normally - C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername.
Yours will be D:\, I assume?

If the cache folder does not exist, then create it. Close Netscape, browse to your Profiles folder and create the Cache Folder in the ~\xxxxxxxx.slt directory.

You might also try deleting the default profile, after backing it up . Do this with Netscape closed.
The User Profile Manager is under the Utilities folder in Netscape on the Programs Menu:
    Start|Programs|Netscape 6|Utilities|User Profile Manager

You said that you did regular backups but hadn't thought to back up your local Mail files. Are you backing up your data on CD? Did you by chance copy any of the Netscape data that isn't showing up in 6.2, from a backup CD?

I know this is quite a few questions, but I need more info to help you figure this out, and to get your mail back... if in fact you haven't completely obliterated the folder.

    Thanks,

    Ramona :D
