I have a Sony Vaio Desktop, Windows XP Home Edition, with Outlook Express 6. Computer was bought newabout 2.5 years ago, with the software installed by Sony.

Yesterday after my PC had been "asleep" for a few hours, I woke it up and checked my e-mail. One message downloaded and then the PC froze with Outlook Express "not respondingâ€. As "End task" did not work I had to turn the PC off. When I switched it on again, my In box was empty, although there were many messages in it before this happened.
I have located my e-mail folders under my Identity and I can see that a "new" InBox has been created, called Inbox(1). The original In Box is still there, but despite deleting the new one OE still cannot access the old one, and when I go on line, another new one is created. What can I do to get the old one back, please?

This is serious as I have unanswered mail in the In Box, so I will be most grateful for any suggestions. Many thanks

    Teenie

Teenie - Welcome to the Board :)

As OE recreates the Inbox each time you delete it it is almost certain that the original Inbox is corrupt and not accessible by OE.

You can try to extract emails from the original Inbox using DbExtract

You do realise that all messages will be delivered to the Inbox and you will have to move them to the folders you created? Good practice to file your stuff in specific folders anyway.
Best advice is disable hibernation - it has a record of causing problems and I would not use Standby either. Go into Display Properties (right click a blank area of the Desktop > Properties or via Control Panel) > Screensaver tab > Power options > Power Button and set ....

    Turn off monitor = x mins - I use 15 mins
Turn off hard drives = Never
    System Standby = Never

Then go to the Hibernate tab and uncheck 'Enable Hibernation'.

This should result in a more stable system.

I'll also do this, as I'm really fed up with the repeated freezing. Thanks again

DbExtract has retrieved all my missing messages, except one - I think the one which was at the top of the InBox when the fault occurred. And theHelp document with it told me how to get them back into OE, so all is well.

    Many thanks - I've learned a lot!

Delighted to hear that DBXtract worked for you - thanks for the update :)

Quite possible that the one message - the last received was corrupt and this fouled up everything else.
