I just created a wireless network, using a Linksys 2.4 GHz 811.G router, and two Linksys 811.G wireless network cards. I am running Windows XP, with Zone Alarm, and have a cable Internet connection. I do not yet have Service Pack 2.

The wireless network is working fine, but now I cannot automatically download Windows updates. The Automatic Updates icon appears in my tray, but it stays on 0%.

Does anyone know if and how I need to reconfigure my network to allow automatic updates?

The first place I'd look is the configuration of Zone Alarm. Windows update connects in it's own right to get the downloads (rather than going through Internet Explorer). Check that the Windows Update application has enough privaleges to connect out.

Another possibility is that the ports Windows Update wants to use are blocked somewhere. If it is using FTP, they wouldn't be opened by the outgoing request. I'm not sure which port it uses - have a trawl around the Microsoft support site. Then check for port settings in Zone Alarm and your Linksys router (which I think has it's own firewall settings).
