I recently had a similar experience. My computer crashed while Firefox was running, with the result that all my user data was lost, and therefore reset to the default when I loaded Firefox.

I ran Check Disk and it recovered several lost chains as files (in \FOUND.000\), which turned out to be the files that were lost. I compared them to the newly created Firefox files to see which was which, stripped out the extra **** that was appended to the real data and saved them back where they should be. Voila - all is working again.

I have now moved my bookmarks file (as suggested in a previous post) and it is part of my regular file.

Can't he just reimport them from the BAK file Firefox generates?

Welcome to the Forum, Happy Dog!

    Happy Dog,

I'm glad you were able to recover your personal data. A daily backup of your Profiles folder will prevent you from ever losing any data...

    Shadowhawk,

The answer to your question is a definitive yes! Change the name of the default bookmarks.html file to BADbookmarks.html. Then rename bookmarks.bak file to bookmarks.html, and the Bookmarks will be replaced.

True, however this relies on you spotting the problem before you run Firefox. In my case both the main bookmark file and the backup had been overwritten.

    Mark,

Too true, as I was reminded that this situation is very similar to the prefs.js file, which prior to Netscape 7.2 had a prefs.bak file. This file was only good if you hadn't closed/restarted Netscape. So you are absolutely correct, Mark. The bookmarks.bak is good, but only if you haven't closed and restarted Firefox.

When I tested, I hadn't opened or closed Firefox... Thanks for keeping me honest!
