    Hi All,

My computer is using WindowsXP and Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.3. When I click on any link in a post, for example, ackerberg's post of five or six days ago, and the replies of Jim, Ramona, and Westside, then close the screen from their links with the red X in the upper right-hand corner there is no green arrow to take me back to their postings. Instead I end up back on the desktop and have to start all over by opening the WindowsBBS site, and then the Netscape and Mozilla section.

I have completely removed Firefox (including registry entries) and then reinstalled the 2.0.0.3 version. The same condition still exists. Alternately, Internet Explorer, which I rarely use, does not have the problem and I can move from a link screen back to the original post by clicking on the back green arrow. Any repair suggestions?

    derfsch,

I just posted this for robfwoods: Tabs Closing

You haven't had the time to read it, so will post again:

Go to your Tab Settings: Tools | Options | Tabs
Enable: New pages should be opened in a new tab

    Disable all other settings

You can also right click a link and select: Open Link in new Tab

When you close the "New Tab" nothing else will be affected.

    Ramona,

Sorry, but neither of your recommendations worked. Setting up the first using the Tabs Settings resulted in the same problem of starting over by going back to the WindowsBBS site and then to the Netscape and Mozilla section to the Posts. What resulted using the your second recommendation of the Right Click and new Tab was that nothing happened, no new site, and the blue link turned and stayed red.

Interesting enough, robfwoods suggestion using the Control key did work and it worked for "Control/W or for Control+W. This is my first experience using the Tab Setting and I left my setting according to your first recommendation but I'm afraid that the long-time experience of clicking the right-hand corner X will be hard to break. If you or others have any other suggestions I'll be glad to try them. Your reply to my post provides an available link to conduct experiments. Thank you for your help.

It sounds to me like you are clicking on the big red X in the upper right of the entire page. This closes the entire browser. That would take you back to the desktop.

To close a tab (only) you click on the smaller red X in the upper right of that tab. This will close just that tab and not the entire browser session. Any Back arrow in the remaining tabs should still be intact.

And if you are not used to using tabs, I would think having the Warn me when closing multiple tabs item checked will tell you that you are about to close the entire browser session. That is the way I have mine set.

If you use Tabs, you are absolutely correct. My problem had to do with no tabs, a condition that I had for years. And, I still prefer not to use them. This brings me back to where I'm used to operating, no tabs. In my first post I stated, although not too clearly, that Internet Explorer brings me back to the "Back Arrow" and not to the desktop. To clarify, click the link in the post, get a new screen, click the big red X and then have the green arrow and the original post available again.

    derfsch,

So you don't want Tabs? You're missing out on one of the best features of Firefox.

O.K., when you have a link, e.g., in this thread, right click the link, and select: Open in new window. When you click the red X to close the new window, you will be back to the original window, and have a back arrow.

    Ramona,

Got it! When you get to be my age, it takes a while for new stuff to grab on. The "right click" and "open in a new window" works fine. But ----- now the left click on a link produces the new screen and then clicking the big red X takes me back to the original post with the Green Back Arrow available which is the way I remember the process previously. I'm back to being a happy camper. Thank you for your interest and help.
