Well, I've run into some more networking problems. Here the situation:
Main computer (Kitchen) is connected to the internet (cable modem) and I have a Linksys Wireless G Router. I have 2 other computers connected - one is directly wired into the router (Basement) and the 2nd one (Laptop) is connected with a wireless notebook adapter. Everything was working fine until I decided to reformat my laptop. Obviously I have some ******* up settings as now I can connect to the internet from all of them but the laptop does not show up in my workgroup computers.

I can ping from Kitchen to Laptop using the ip address but not by name.

Both computers belong to MSHOME group. I have folders shared on both.

    My Wireless Network Connection Settings..strange

When i check my Wireless Network properties under My network connections, only the "Internet Protocol TCP/ICP" is checked. When I try to check any other options such as "File and Print Sharing" I get an error message that says YOUR CURRENT SELECTION WILL ALSO DISABLE THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS FILE AND PRINT SHARING, etc

...that makes no sense to me if I am trying to enable it. Weird.

    Netbeui

Everything is now enabled. (File and print sharing, etc)

I also looked around on the net for more solutions and found an article on Microsoft about installing NetBEUI protocol on both systems. I did this on my main computer and laptop with some luck.

I now can see my Laptop from my main computer but cannot access any files from within it.

    Wizard run

Ran networking wizard again to see if that would fix things...no.

So now from the Main computer, I can see my other 2 computers (Basement-wired and Laptop-wireless) I can access all files on the wired but cannot access the Laptop.

From the Laptop I can see only the Kitchen but not the Basement one and I can also access all Kitchen files from the Laptop.

Obviously I must be missing some setting somewhere. Hope this isn't too confusing!

Try testing the connectivity and name resolution between the computers and report back the exact message following after each one.

    1) Ping itself by name
    2) Ping itself by ip address
    3) Ping the other by name
    4) Ping the other by ip address
    5) Ping 127.0.0.1

Try creating entries in the LMHOSTS file for each PC. Do this on all PCs.
