    looking for help

The last time I had problems I found the answer in this forum so hope someone can help me this time.

I seem to be losing the constant struggle to maintain the security integrity of my machine - adaware and spyware are crashing before they have completed, explorer homepage has been altered and I am being bombarded with popups. I am running norton 2005 but the automatic protection does not always prevent viruses from getting through.

Anyway here is my latest hijack this report:

    Hello junohera,

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Documents and Settings\ron\My Documents\MsgPlus.exe "

Have you read the EULA for Messenger plus? In the fine print, you've agreed to have ads downloaded to your system.

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A5366673-E8CA-11D3-9CD9-0090271D075B} - (no file)

    Two varients of this:
jccatch.dll FlashGet This is a legitimate BHO but can cause IE crashes Link here http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=ADW_FLASHGET.A

msacmx.dll CoolWebSearch parasite variant A destructive parasite.

Do a search on both .dll names on your system and post the results.

Wait for one of the security gurus to tell you how to rid yourself of it.

These are not the results of viruses getting thru Norton, you invited them thru the Browser. http://www.infinisource.com/techfiles/surf-safe.html Browser Security

    Hi junohera,

When you use that dog of a search program, click on advanced options, make sure that searches in: systems files and subfolders & hidden files are checked.

EDIT: And there may not be one - the HJT log says "no file" associated with it.

Otherwise just wait for help from Lonny, Dave, or Newt.

    Regards - Charles

Download CWShredder 2.0 from here. Save it to the desktop. Double click to install.

    Check for updates to Ad-aware.

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

Right click My Computer and choose properties. On system restore tab, check the box to turn off. OK out.

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and OK. Yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode. Logon to you user account.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders, as well as system files.

Open CWShredder, and with all other windows closed, click fix.

Search the drive for a folder named Instant Access and delete if found.

I recommend you go to add/remove programs and uninstall MessengerPlus3, then delete the folder in C:\Program Files.

Open C:\WINDOWS and delete the file ccwkwn.exe.
Open C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data and delete the folder more once memo comp.
Open C:\Documents and Settings\ron\Application Data and delete the folders BOLDPO~1 and STYLEC~1.
Open C:\Temp if present, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.

Run Ad-aware in full scan mode and delete all it finds.

Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and OK.
Uncheck the /safeboot box in msconfig and ok to reboot.

Back in Windows, you can re-enable system restore. Then visit Windows Update. Accept all critical updates.
Reboot and go back to Windows Update until there are no more criticals offered.

Scan your PC with RAV. If any files are infected, click the report button then copy and paste it here.

Download HijackThis.exe version 1.99 from here. Save it to the HJT folder, overwriting the one you currently have. Run a new scan and post the log.

many many thanks for all the excellent advice and guidance.

completed most of the tasks, however, just a couple of problems still lingering:

    1) when I run disk cleanup the new window opens but task does not complete (I tried leaving it for 10 mins to check that it wasn't just slow to complete but still nothing)

    2) I can use Ad-aware under my username but under other usernames it crashes just after it has completed scan - windows debug appears - so unable to delete what it finds. Also find it odd that it picks up files that a scan under another username doesn't.

    3) I took charlesvar's advice and altered browser securtity settings but although new internet settings are working, trusted sites settings are not and I end up having to reset inernet settings to allow trusted sites to function properly

This is my latest HijackThis log

Fix the following entry with HJT, with all other windows closed.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.ziszbatstiudwmxwonrinwoo...a69WEV2ljzb.jsp

    Post a new HJT log.

Did you delete everything in the C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp folder for each username while in safe mode? Log on to each username and clear the temporary internet files via control panel>internet options, then empty the recycle bin. Disk cleanup may take quite a while if you've never run it before. If Ad-aware still crashes on other user accounts, after doing the above, post a HJT log created while logged on to that account.

I have resolved the problem with the trusted sites settings; deleted everything from temp folders and fixed indicated line on HijackThis log from my username.

Ad-aware still crashing under this username so here is HijackThis log from that username:

Note - received this message before scan

For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may not be able to fix this

Scan again and fix the following entries.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.btsbzfgrehgnrz.net/kK/R1...OirwSHeCIy/.asp
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [salm] c:\temp\salm.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [cake for] C:\DOCUME~1\richy\APPLIC~1\BOLDPO~1\surf pop balm.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MemoCompIntraUser] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\more once memo comp\Playabout.exe

Reboot to safe mode and open C:\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data and delete the folder more once memo comp if present.
Open C:\Documents and Settings\richy\Application Data and delete the folder BOLDPO~1.
    Empty the recycle bin.
Reboot and post a new log, from both accounts.

It still appears that the machine is in need of Windows Updates.

And I still recommend you scan with RAV.

Did you get disk cleanup to complete successfully?

Looks good except for 1 entry.

    O23 - Service: Panda Process Protection Service - Unknown - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Panda Software\PavShld\pavprsrv.exe (file missing)

A leftover service from a previously installed Panda AV software? Recommend fixing the entry and deleting the Pansda software folder if still present. Would probably be a good idea to run a registry cleaner too. I recommend RegSeeker. I personally have never experienced any problems removing everything it finds, but recommend checking all of your installed programs for functionality after each cleaning (usually takes 2 or 3 consecutive cleanings for maximum results). If you experience any problems, you can reinstall the backups created.

What exactly happens when you run disk cleanup? I would start it and walk away for an hour myself, as it does sometimes take that long and longer on it's first run.

The only other thing I surely hope you do is visit Windows Update. There are quite a few patches (critical updates) available to help protect your comp from known vulnerabilities.

I agree. I think my record for a PC is about 2.75 hours for a first run to complete. When they are being done regularly (weekly for instance) the time soon gets down to 2.75 minutes or similar.

just a final note to say thanks to noahdfear for all the help - system is running well.

Still have cleanup and adaware problem but I think I will be able to resolve these myself without taking up any more of your valuable time.
