    I'm looking for recommendations for a reliable text to speech software with a variety of voices, etc. I've seem some advertised in the $30-40 range.

    Have you tried any of the demos, many come with a ~30 day trial. Testing for yourself will probably be best as everyone's taste differs.

    Why not start with the one's you have looked at and we could perhaps help more with recommendations.

    I can recommend Verbose Text to Speech. I picked it up online a while ago for about $10 on sale and it's really simple. There are usually good Amazon deals or Best Buy deals online if you do some searching for discount codes or sales.

    It's the only one I've used but it is smooth and has like 25 different voices to choose from. You can also save as MP3 or WAV for playback.
