Can anyone recommend a better program than Divx for playing AVI files? Divx 2.0 worked just fine for me till yesterday when it gave me a VBS runtime error. I upgraded to 2.1 but now every time I try to play an AVI file, the pic will freeze while the sound continues. The program freezes completely and I have to cold boot my PC to get functionality back. I really don't want to deal with all this hassle. Are there any other programs out there besides Divx player?

I play all mine in WMP, but used to use several others.

I have no idea if this is "the best" or even how it compares, but it works:

You said you use WMP. I tried using it, but it would only play the audio portion of the AVI. I know I need a codec, but where can I download it? Does the M$ site have a codec for playing AVI files on WMP?

HAve you checked to see if the .AVI files are associated with WMP ?

If you had used other players they may not be.

I had same problem until I found that Real Player had crabed the .AVI files.

I installed WMP 9. It started to play the file and then froze up just as my Divx player did. I believe it must be the file itself, for 2 unrelated players to freeze up at the same point.

It seems the most utilitarian, all-purpose codec for avi's these days is the latest dev release of ffdshow.

    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ffdshow/ffdshow-20020617.exe?download

I should warn you that though the latest release of Global DivX Player works very well, it installs that cursèd SaveNOW **** and a weather program (which at least appears in Add/Remove). You will need to clean those up after installing it with Ad-Aware or PestPatrol, or something similar.

The player works fine without them, despite the warnings you'll get. I like it quite a bit, actually.

This app will tell you what codecs are used by an avi and whether you have them installed:
    http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

If you happen to get a file designated as an XVid, you can play it with the DivX codecs by changing the file header with this app:
    http://inmatrix.hoyty.com/mirror/avic100.zip
Just put DivX in both boxes.

When an avi just won't play, use this to strip the index from the file, then rebuild it. It also has some error-checking ability:
    http://divfix.maxeline.com/divfix1091.zip
Stripping and rebuilding the index of an incompletely downloaded avi will let you see what you have so far.
