    Look here ....

    ASUS- Drivers and Download

    Input model to Search A8N-VM - All drivers - chipset package.

    The USB 2 drivers should be included in and loaded from the mobo CD

    You will have to determine what the PCI Device (other device) is - a specific driver is required which you have not loaded. Check what is plugged into the PCI slots and check that you have installed the drivers for each or, if one card is not working, that's it :)

    Hi PeteC,

    Tks for your advice.

    I have checked numerous times and could not find the right driver on the CD coming with the mobo

    I don't have a card plugged on the PCI slot. I have no idea what it is. I suppose it refers to the USB ports on the case not on the mobo.

    Actually the USB drivers are Microsoft and are loaded with the OS - my bad :(

    Give us some background .... I assume the enhanced USB controller does not show up in Device Manager?

    What is the history of this problem? Have you changed the motherboard?

    Hi PeteC,

    It may not be the problem of MS driver. I have ousb2hub.sys, ousbehci.sys, etc. installed to satisfy the driver need.

    Sorry, yes. Both the PCI device and the USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller show up in the Device Manager. I can't get rid of them. After uninstalling them, on next boot WinXP still found these devices. I have no idea what they are. There is no card plugged in the PCI slot.

    In the Device Manager there is another "Universal Serial Bus controllers (not that one above "USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller). Under it are "Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller" and "USB Root Hub" (w/o yellow question mark)

    The problem existed since I installed WinXP on this box more than a year ago. I use WinXP for reference only in case of problem on the mobo to contact the local Technical Support of ASUS agent. I seldom run it. This is a Linux box, with FedoraCore6 and Gentoo running nicely on another 2 HDs. 'cos ASUS agent here does not provide support on Linux. To avoid dispute on the problem of mobo I'm compelled to maintain WinXP here. If WinXP can run on this box without problem I can make Linux/Unix to run on this box. I don't need their support.

    The WinXP is the 1st generation product, I suppose. I got it on about 1999/2000. I can't remember it exactly. Just for curiosity I bring this problem back to see whether I can solve it and to find out what is the cause of the problem in order to learn.

    I am quite certain that nVidia use Windows USB drivers, BUT, it needs XP Service Pack 1 (possibly Service Pack 2).

    Hi Matt,

    Tks for your advice.

    Before installing NVIDIA drivers WinXP asked for ousb2hub.sys, ousbehci.sys, IIRC. I have these drivers to satisfy the request. The yellow marks were still on the devices mentioned before.

    Just download/Installed "8.26_11.09_nforce_winxp_english.exe" on;

    http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

    During installation following warning popup;
    Can't Start this Hardware
    There was a problem installing this hardware
    NVIDIA USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller
    This device cannot start (Code 10)

    On Device Manager;
    Under "Universal Serial Bus controllers "
    -NVIDIA USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller
    -USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller
    Both of them having a yellow "!" on.

    There is another "Universal Serial Bus controllers "
    -Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
    -USB Root Hub
    No yellow mark on these devices

    Test on USB ports

    Hi folks,

    Further to my late posting.

    Plugin an USB2.0 thumb drive on the USB port of the mobo. WinXP detected it assigning it as Drive-G. I can find the thum drive on Desktop. Files on the thumb drive can be read.

    Plugin a USB2.0 enclosure (external HD). WinXP also detected it but with following warning popup;
    Code:
    The USB Mass Storage Device will function at reduced speed.
    You must add a HI-SPEED USB Host Controller to this
    computer to obtain max performance
    I can't find this drive on Desktop. I think the problem is here.

    Unless I am reading your information incorrectly, you are running in "Low-Speed" USB, which is the old USB 1.1.

    From my experience, to install the Enhanced controller correctly (which runs Hi-Speed/USB 2.0) you will need to have Windows XP Service Pack 1 installed. See Pete's "sticky" at the top of this forum.

    You said it was the "original" version of Windows (1999-2000). Have you installed Service Pack 1 or 2?

    Hi Matt,

    After installing the drivers on the CD coming with the USB enclosure, problem solved. One thing I can't resolve. Without installing the driver, USB 2.0 thumb drive can work on this WinXP w/o problem but NOT the USB enclosure.

    This is a very old version of WinXP w/o service packs. I only run it as reference on building new PC in case of hardware problem. I installed WinXP on this Linux box running AMD Athlon64 >1 year ago only to settle a dispute on the problem of ASUS motherboard. I found a problem on the mobo on installing 64bit Gentoo Linux but the agent of ASUS here rejected it saying that they don't support Linux compelling me installing WinXP to show them the problem. Finally they changed another mobo. I applied this tactic several times before on hardware dispute. The hardware vendor can't deny that they don't support Linux to escape liability. If they can make Windows running on their hardware I can run Linux/Unix on it w/o their support.

    I found the problem of USB driver one year ago. I just left it there because I don't run Windows. Curiosity made me bringing up this problem.

    I'll erase WinXP later and reinstall it on an AMD Athlon64 dual core box running ASUS M2N-E mobo to see what will happen.

    Thanks again for your advice.

    Hi PeteC,

    Tks for your advice and URL.

    I started;

    Start (left-click) --> Explore

    turning around there and can't find the device (USB enclosurer)

    If plugging in a USB thumb drive it appeared there as drive (G) also on the desktop, similar to inserting a CD on CD drive.

    Where is Disk Management? Is it on Control Panel? Tks

    Hi PeteC,

    Further to my late posting. Just finished testing WinXP on the AMD Athlon64 dual core box. The testing result is as follows;

    1)
    Installed WinXP on an old ATA100 HD. After installation finished WinXP box can't connect Internet (onboard NIC not working). There were 8 big yellow question marks on "Device Manager" if IIRC.

    2)
    Ran a Live Linux CD, mounted WinXP HD and download the file "WindowXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe" on "My Documents" folder.

    3)
    Restarted WinXP and ran "WindowXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe" to install SP2. The number of big yellow question marks was reduced to 4 on Device Manager;

    - Other devices
    --> Other PCI Bridge Device
    --> PCI device
    --> SM Bus Controller
    --> Vedio Controller

    4)
    Installed drivers on the CD packed with mobo. After finish there was only one big yellow question mark left bebind;

    - Other devices
    --> PCI device

    5)
    Installed drivers on the CD packed with the "USB external enclosure ", the last big yellow question mark gone.

    I still need the drivers of mobo and "USB external enclosure ".

    It seems that the install on the dual core box was successful
    These drivers will always be required for the mobo chipset and other facilities and clearly your USB enclosure requires drivers too (probably for a USB controller in the enclosure) - not all OEM external hard drives do - my Maxtors do not as far as I remember.

    BTW - Disk Management ....

    Right click My Computer icon > Manage > Disk Management or ....

    Start > Run > type in compmgmt.msc > OK

    Hi PeteC,

    I haven't fine turned WinXP. The PC is a 64bit box running dual core CPU. My WinXP is only a 32bit version. Besides it needs SMP technology to fully utiliize the benefit of dual core CPU.

    Symmetric multiprocessing
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symmetric_multiprocessing

    In Linux/Unix Worlds we don't need those stuffs. After purchasing the hardware usually I threw them on shelves never touching them. For such a reason I forgot them and started this thread.

    Tks for your advice. I'll test it when I have a WinXP box here. I'm prepared building a 64 bit AMD quad core box when the CUP is available. It'll come soon in about mid of this year.

    Ah, one thought just popup on my head. Is there Windows Vista trial version available? In my old days when I was running Windows about 7~8 years ago. There were trial Windows versions. If YES then I can throw away my WinXP just download the trial version for testing or in case of need.

    Not at present - the betas of Vista were opened up to the public and have long expired.
