    Hi all,
I have a Compaq EVO N610c and when I turn on the power the screen stays black for a time and then I get a row of aprox. ½ " tall vertical lines across the bottom of the screen.
After a short delay, those vertical lines become 1 solid line from left to right. It’s like it is gathering information or something. This only happens on a cold boot. If I reboot the system, it boots fine without the vertical lines.
Since it happens before it boots, I think it is a hardware problem, or it may be normal and not a problem at all.

    Any idea what this is?
    Running winXP Pro fully patched

    Thanks
    Sven

Hi SVEN. It sounds to me like a problem with the graphics chip. Whenever you see vertical or horizontal lines across the screen that can indicate that either the integrated graphics chip is starting to fail or the screen has some display problem. Do you have an external monitor that you can use to test the issue with?

I also find it strange that it only happens on a cold boot.

I just plugged in my external monitor and the same bars are on the bottom of the screen.
Then these bars fill in to a solid line, after that it boots.
To clarify, these are not distortions of any kind.
It looks like the computer is looking for information.
I had an old computer that always told me: “verifying pool data”
It reminds me of that, but I don’t get a pop up.

    Thanks
    Sven

Are the bars small little white bars that fill into a solid white line?

Just for clarification do the bars look like my screenshot below?

If they look like the screenshot that I posted below then there is nothing to worry about. I had an old Windows XP computer that had those bars on boot up before booting to the Windows XP Logo. Its just part of the boot up process.

I have seen a similar thing with PCs which originated from a company which was loading some particular software. Have you had this PC since it was new and was it purchased for private use? I had to reformat and reinstall the operating system to get rid of it.

Also have you tried checking the BIOS settings and set it to 'Load Fail-Safe Defaults'?
