I've never seen so many log file on a system, new or old. There are 350 log file on my sys. Some are over 5 meg in size.

Is there a link or something that shows which can be removed?

Oh, one more, i just bought window washer (3,0). It has some good plugins availabe to clean up various "things ". One of the plugins is for "Applog" but i dont see (or can't find) an Applog file on my sys. Is it named differently for XP Home?

    thanks,
    savagcl

    From the following MSKB http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;186020

How to Determine the Programs Disk Defragmenter Optimizes
The information in this article applies to:
    Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
    Microsoft Windows 98

This article was previously published under Q186020
    SUMMARY
The following article describes how to determine the programs that are optimized by the Windows 98 and Windows Me Disk Defragmenter tool.
    MORE INFORMATION
When Disk Defragmenter optimizes programs, it logs information about this optimization in a file named Optlog.txt. The Optlog.txt file is located in the Windows\Applog folder. To determine the programs that are optimized by Disk Defragmenter, use the following steps:

Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
In the Named box, type optlog.txt, and then click Find Now.
Double-click the Optlog.txt file, and then scroll to the Programs Eligible For Optimization section. Programs that are optimized by Disk Defragmenter are listed under this section.
Disk Defragmenter optimizes a program by moving the executable files and supporting files to a contiguous area of your hard disk. This can significantly decrease the time it takes to start the program.

Programs that are not optimized by Disk Defragmenter are listed under the Programs Ineligible For Optimization section. Note that programs that are not optimized do not have improved start times. These programs are flagged in the Optlog.txt file with the reason the program is not optimized.

    Flag Description
S Log size smaller than <minimum log size>
U Program not used for more than <maximum no used days>
    P No profile for program
E Associated program no longer exists
D Log deleted (may be combined with one of the above)

    Barbara-Ann, thanks for the reply.

I'm not real sure what your reply had to do with my question? :)
I'm not really concerned with defrag. My question dealt with log files (amount of them) and which could be removed safely.

BTW: I dont find any optlog file either -XP Home.

    thanks,
    savagcl

You asked - One of the plugins is for "Applog" but i dont see (or can't find) an Applog file on my sys. Is it named differently for XP Home?

and the reply I posted - When Disk Defragmenter optimizes programs, it logs information about this optimization in a file named Optlog.txt. The Optlog.txt file is located in the Windows\Applog folder

And the article covers Windows 98 and Me

Thank you, Barbara-Ann. I forgot about the second part of my msg. Does XP-Home do it differently?

And of course, (Part 1) which of the 350 logs can i safely get rid of?

    Appreciate the come-back,
    savagcl

Getting rid of the log files will strictly depend on what ones you have.

Some are purely history and you can safely get rid of them. Others are required for an app to operate correctly.

And in general, unless you are short on drive space, probably just as well to leave them all there. Compress them if you want to free up some space.
