    Good Afternoon,

I am currently running Windos 7 Ultimate x32 and my question hopefully is a simple one to answer. In previous editions of Windows (XP), not sure about Vista, there is a screen saver that would come on after a short amount of inactivity. There is a screensaver within windows (logged in as a user) but I cannot find a way to turn on a screen saver while at the login screen. Is there an easy way to turn one on?

    Thank you in advance,

    John

If you mean you want the computer to return to the logon screen when you move the mouse and the screen saver kicks off:
    1. Go to Control Panel>Personalization or if you use the Category view, Control Panel>Appearance and Personalization>Personalization
    2. Click on the Screensaver icon
    3. On the screensaver window, check the box for "On resume display logon screen." Click OK and close the Personalization window.

By default there's no screen saver available on the Windows 7 logon screen.

Reason is that Direct3D support doesn't seem to be available at the logon screen, so the build-in Windows 7 screen savers won't work.

You can work around this 'issue' by either using a 3rd party screen saver that doesn't require Direct3D support, or using a pre-Windows 7 screen saver from an older Windows version.

You'll have to apply the following registry changes:

Copy/paste this in a text file, and rename to screensaver.reg, then double-click this file to merge these changes in your registry.

You'll have to change logon.scr to whatever the name of your screen saver is, and can change the value of ScreenSaveTimeOut to the amount (of seconds) that you prefer for the timeout.

I used the logon.scr screen saver from Windows Vista.
