I don't know what has happend. My computer will boot up to the welcome screen with the various logon identities - it's a family computer. I cannot log on with any of them, the logon starts and then immediately proceeds to logoff.

I have tried safe mode with networking, command prompt etc. - the same thing happens. I have also tried to log on to the computer through logmein.com and that doesn't work.

The only thing I know for sure is that last night one of my boys was using an old program and was getting error messages to the like of "can't find disk label" or something to that effect.

This is all I know, I hope someone can help.

btw: AMD 2200, 512m ram, nvidia 16 meg video, soyo mb

    Try the advice offered here.

If no joy, post back for other options.

I have tried this too, to no avail. All the options at the F8 prompt have led nowhere. I am at the point that I am seriously considering re-installing WXP - and backing up all the important stuff and then do a clean install.

Also, the program my son was using was called "wearth.exe ", which I think is an old MS game or utility. When my son clicked on it, it loaded a wallpaper of earth with stars/space in the background. He tried to switch it back to the old wallpaper, but "wearth.exe" refused to let go of the wallpaper.

    I hope this helps.

I finally got the computer going. I feel like such a dope  - I tried the recovery console without any success. Today I intended to re-install WXP - and finally realized I had missed the repair option.

So now it's up and going. I am going to do a backup and then do a clean install.

    Thanks Pete,
That's the program. Though I can't quite understand the translation - it obviously does not end in a typical fashion like other programs.
