I am working on an XP home system that had some infections. I deleted and cleaned the system using AVG and Malwarebytes, but the system still interjects error messages that logon files were infected. I must have deleted some of the sys32 logon files now and cannot boot at all. when I try to boot in safe or last known good config, I get BSOD and errors are c000021a fatal system error. This is referring to the windows logon process system. also when I try to re-install and repair Xp with my disc, I get the BSOD stop error 0x0000007b,oxf8990524,oxc0000034.
Can anyone tell me how to get this booting again? Thanks

Take out the drive and connect it to another comp > copy wanted data > put drive back > wipe the disk and reinstall.

Sorry, but I don't really understand...I can put the drive in another computer, but what do I copy? Make it a slave? can I then do a repair install? Please expand...Thanks

I would slave the drive, backup any wanted data, then wipe the drive completely (format) and reinstall Windows. Slave the drive on another comp > backup data > put drive back in original comp > boot from Windows CD > don't do a repair install > delete the Windows partition > create a new partition > reinstall.

Tony answered/explained it all in his post. When you have formatted the drive, you are unlikely to receive a BSOD when trying to do a new install.

If you do, just post the info & we'll go from there.

As it is a SATA drive you have 3 options .....

XP install CD's prior to SP3 had no SATA support so the easiest way to overcome this issue is to use an XP SP3 CD. If your CD is retail, not OEM and not at that level slipstream SP3 into it .....

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Create Bootable CD

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD

If you need to slipstream SP2 & SP3 there is no need to burn a CD after slipstreaming SP2, continue with SP3.

If you have a floppy drive in the computer refer to the motherboard manual and CD for information for making a floppy to insert when requested - press F6 on the second (?) blue install screen and insert the floppy into the drive when requested.

If you don't have a floppy drive see ....

Install Windows XP on SATA without a Floppy (F6)

Thanks again for the help. After the re format, I was able to start the install again. I got a usb keyboard freeze at one point and had to resume the install, but finally succeeded. I have been out of town all day and tomorrow I will install 2 security programs and recheck. I will advise the final outcome and close the thread if it is fine

Just install your standard security apps, such as Microsoft Security Essentials and specialty apps like Malwarebytes. No need to worry about any leftover malware, they cannot survive a disk format.
