Logitech Keyboard + Mouse - USB not recognized

I have a Logitech Cordless Desktop Wave (keyboard + mouse). It has always worked from the moment I plugged it in, but this morning, it stopped working. Plugging in the device brings up a "USB Not Recognized" message. Here's what I know and I'm hoping that someone can help.

Batteries are new

Unplugging and plugging, even when restarting computer, doesn't work.

I tried to update the driver, but it came back with a message that all the drivers are completely updated, but the device is still unrecognized.

I followed a thread's advice and uninstalled the USB device and rebooted. No luck.

This problem has expanded and some new information has come up. First, I have a house guest that plugged in a spare Iphone battery into my computer to recharge. It's apple-formatted and it's possible that Windows just freaked out a bit.

Now, even when I don't have anything plugged into the USB ports, I'm getting messages saying that I have a unrecognized device in my USB. When I look at my device manager, nothing shows. Phantom USB devices are never good...

 

Also, thanks to Pete C for the help. I will also try to plug in the device into another computer to see if it works.

I went to the device manager and expanded the USB controllers. There was one device named something like "Unknown USB Device" in the 2nd spot of the USB Root Hubs. I uninstalled that one and rebooted. Under the device manager/USB controllers there are 8 items labeled (sequentially) Intel(R) ICH9 Family USB Unisversal Host Controller - ####. This is followed by 8 items labeled USB Root Hub (the Unknown USB device is gone.) Should I uninstall all 16 of these controllers and Root Hubs? If so, I will give it a shot. Thanks!
