    Hello Noahdfear,

I have a problem with my laptop running Windows XP, (service pack 2, I believe). When booting up the computer, it will state that it is 'logging in' then the screen blinks and states 'logging off, saving settings'.

I have attempted to boot into safe mode and actually get to the desktop screen, black in color with 'safe mode' in all four corners and the OS on the top middle of the screen. Unfortunately, this is all that my computer would do at that time.

In searching the web for a 'fix',on a different computer, I stumbled upon your wonderful site and joined. In reviewing a particular thread (sorry, I am not sure who it is from or when), I found this person had the same issue that I am experiencing. There, your instructions were to download two seperate software programs and make a bootable CD.

I ran this CD in the laptop and got to the ERD Commander screen where my OS is not being detected as the choices state 'NONE'. I can continue to the desktop, but obviously I cannot utilize any of the tools as my OS was not found previously. FYI: I am currently running Macafee for antivirus software (when my computer works) and a spyware program (not sure of the name) but is very good and finds things my antivirus may not.

Also, once per week I run WINUTILITIES with the registry cleaner option to get rid of anything that may have accumulated there from the web or otherwise. Regularly, I delete the cookies and history of any online activity for the same reasons. I consider myself a safe surfer, but sometimes the unexpected does happen.

Please give me several avenues to explore when responding as I do not have constant access to another computer for repsonding back and forth.

    Thank you.

I doubt this is down to malware, more likely a corrupted install or flakey hard drive, especially as you are unable it would seem to boot into Safe Mode.

Your thread has been moved to the Windows XP forum with title edit.

Do you have a retail XP install CD or only a Recovery disk?
