I heard that XP Pro (only) has the ability to be "locked Down" so that if dialed into remotely, a user will have access to the computer. Much like a PC Anywhere deal. Does anyone know how to activate this feature?

    Thanks,

Ralph - you said "... locked Down" so that if dialed into remotely, a user will have access ... "

I'm really not sure what you want to do from reading that. To me, "locked down" and "have access" don't seem to go together.

I am familiar with the Terminal Services that is sorta like a dumbed down remote control applet. And the remote assistance feature. Is either of those what you want info on?

My goal is to be able to use my computer from a remote location. I was told at a seminar, that there is a feature...lock down may not be the name or correct term, but it gives you the ability to access the computer remotely, much like PC anywhere or similar program. I understand that this feature is only available on XP Pro and not Home addition.
    Any ideas?

I have XP Home and there is a "Remote Assistance" feature which will allow you to do what you want...I think. (I've never used it)

On my system, Remote Assistance is on the Start Menu. When I click on it, Help & Support starts up with a wizard to guide you through the process. (You have to send an "invitation" to the computer you want to allow access to from the computer it will be accessing)

No, that is a troubleshooting issue. If you are having a problem an administrator or IT guy can access you computer and see what's going on and fix it....although, maybe that is the same thing?? Don't know!
    But thanks for the reply

Yup. Remote desktop is Terminal Server's remote control piece.

Works well. What the article didn't mention though is

. you see your session rather than the current desktop on the remote PC. You won't see apps they have running or actions they are taking.

. if you start an app and then log off the remote system, your app keeps on running. But anyone logging in from the console of the remote system won't see any obvious signs of it.

Not quite sure I understand....can I run an app remotely on the XP machine? Are you saying that I will not be able to see other apps that have been started and are still running at the time of a remote session?

Yes, you can run any app(s) you want - or that your account has permission to run.

No, you will not see other apps that are running unless you get into task manager and look around that way.

One thing that may cause exceptions to the above (never tried it). If you log on remotely with a particular username and start an app then log off, you will see that app when you log back on remotely. So, if the local console logon is the same as yours, you might see running apps. Maybe.

    Now What??

I was able to dial into my computer at work (connected), but now what? how do I access it? Is there a window that should open to allow me to "see" the computer remotely? Is there a feature I need to enable or start, before I leave the office at night? Your help is always appreciated!!

    Thanks

Take a look Here or do a Google search and look for terminal services remote control.

I suspect that one of the 325,000 hits will give you the needed information.
